Urgh. Just found lice on two of my kids. Great.

I read Hillview's great post about lice removal so just sent DH to the store to get the comb and will try the comb and conditioner trick. I also have Tea Tree Oil on hand so will put that in their hair after combing.

So what else do I have to do tonight - change all bedding, rugs, towels? What about the car seats they sat in today - do I need to remove the covers and wash them? And blankets on the couch, couch slip covers? What else am I forgetting in my complete panic right now?

I have 2 boys with short hair and didn't think I'd have to be dealing with this (I know, wishful thinking) and so have only skimmed lice info in the past. And right now I'm so panicked about it I don't have time to google everything.

Also, Hillview FWIW your thread was extremely helpful, esp your comment about the nits looking like sand. I checked DS earlier today and couldn't find anything but white looking dandruff. But tonight when I read your lice post and you said the nits look like sand, I gave his head another look and found little sand bits. I still wasn't convinced and after looking for about 5 mins and finding nothing else, I finally found a crawling bug. I then checked my other DS and found his right away. ARGGGGH.

some good lice facts!

http://www.hairfairies.com/lice-facts.htm

Although lice don't survive long on bedding, it's best to wash the sheets of anyone being treated for lice. Clothing worn in the past 48 hours should also be washed in hot water. While parents are sometimes told to clean and quarantine all of a child's stuffed animals, experts say this is not necessary. If your child sleeps with a favorite plush toy, pop it in the hot dryer for 20 minutes. That should kill any creepy-crawlies.

Thanks so much to both of you for posting! I was rushing around earlier trying to get their bedding off, stuffed animals quarantined, hair combed, etc. that I didn't have time to search and read every old thread. I did read quite a few but wasn't finding all the info I needed about clothing and such.

Thank you, thank you! Off to read your links now

Btw, the conditioner trick worked extremely well. My DH had bought some kind of shampoo, gel, spray kit at Target and so he first tried to use the comb out gel from the kit, but it didn't work nearly as well as the regular conditioner we have. My poor DS1 had SO many eggs in his hair I couldn't believe it. Fortunately DS2 didn't have too many, and my DD maybe had none, we weren't sure.

Oh dear. So sorry you are dealing with this. Remember you and DH need to check each other just in case.
