View Full Version : So what do you still need for baby?

Melaine

I have like NO clothing. I have a gown and some onesies. That's all, I'm not kidding. I've bought some other less timely "essentials" like a Tripp Trapp but I'm afraid I've neglected the newborn age somewhat.

I still need/want:
Umm, clothes!!!
Changing pad
Co-sleeper
Stroller
Bouncy Seat
Crib bedding
Pack ‘n play sheets
Diaper Pail
Burp Cloths
Pacifiers
Bottles

Starting to feel a bit panicky.

Get lots of the footed pajamas with fold over mittens already attached. Socks and mittens just fall off newborns and their feet get cold and hands scratch their face. I use those in the day and the onesies at night to swaddle in so she doesn't get too hot

Halo sleep sack with swaddle or the Woombie if you want easy swaddling

A swing and a bouncer ( I have fisher price snugabunny...more up front expense, but no batteries and the FP Rainforest Bouncer)

Use Amazon or Diapers.com. Fast cheap (or free) shipping and good prices. Remember all you really need is a carseat, a place to sleep, a few clothes, and boobs or formula/bottles! Everything else is convenience!

I have a ridiculous amount of boy newborn clothing from last time (even though I gave half of it away!) though I do need a few gowns/sleepers, which I never seemed to get as gifts (instead I got an inordinant amount of onesies and impractical outfits).

I still need:

Swing
Rock n Play (going to wait on bouncer, DS never liked his)
Co-sleeper & sheets
Changing pad
Changing table (First one was an all in one dresser which DS is still using)
Baby "gym"/tummy time mat (do I really need?)
A few bottles/pacis but I'm not freaking on these as I plan to nurse and just want to have a couple kinds to try out
Swaddle wraps
Waiting on/trying to avoid pack n play because DS would not sleep in the bassinet and it just became a toy collector

We need almost everything. Have the crib, mattress and mattress pad, some sheets, got the bouncer and carrier, and a few random presents. My shower is in a couple of weeks so here's hoping people feel like getting us what we need.

I have noticed that people love to give you cute & impractical stuff anyway ;)

Oh, and I'm due in March so don't panic yet - lots of time until May :)

I think at this point we have most of the stuff we'll need. I did have a shower, so I got some of the items that were really important. The things I still need to get include new tubes/bottles for my pump, a new feeding seat, a bookshelf, some other small odds and ends. I did buy a bunch of new clothes for him because even though I still have DS1's newborn stuff, DS1 was born in the summer, so the new born and 0-3 stuff is really the wrong season. I have more onesies than I think I'll ever need though.

I still need to get some things from friends who've offered to lend them to me-- a swing, a bouncy seat, a moby wrap. My swing has gone missing, sadly (I lent it out and the person I think I lent it to swears she never had it. I think it's in her storage somewhere and she just forgot, but I'm not dwelling on it. Or trying not to.) I never had a decent bouncy seat with DS, so having one will be nice. And, I only have an ergo and a bjorn (and I have no idea where the bjorn is), so hoping to get that moby from my friend.

Good luck and have fun shopping/registering!

We've got about 4 months to go (OMG), and the birthmother still hasn't gone to her anatomy scan, so, so far at least, this is a surprise coming, which complicates things....

If there's a boy hiding in there, we still need:
A Pack N Play (while the baby may not care if they sleep in a pink one, I do care!)
CLOTHES!
Onsies
Non-pink bottles
Good swaddling blankets
Pacifiers
Changing pad covers
A new/bigger place to live, LOL

If there's a girl hiding in there, we need:
More Onsies
Pacifiers
Good swaddling blankets
Changing pad covers
Crib bedding (I've fallen in love with a damask set, but much more girly than I could handle for a boy!)

Other random, no matter the gender things we need:
Diaper bag
Diaper pail
Wet bags (for the cloth diapers)
Towels
Baby Wash/shampoo
Formula
Baby proofing items
Something to put a "middle age" baby in (exersaucer, bumbo play thing, etc) for when a bouncer is too young but they still need to be contained)
Diaper doublers of some sort
Diapering things (rash cream, wipes, etc)
Some sort of white noise machine
A new baby monitor (unless I find DD's old one, but that one is still 10+ years old, LOL, so we deserve a new one!)
Something for on-the-floor entertainment (gym or such)

OMG... Until I started writing it down, I thought we were about done and ready! LOL

I only recently started buying stuff a few weeks ago, and I'm due in Feb. But I saved everything I had from DS, so I already had the major gear I need.
Since I'm expecting a girl, I just basically needed clothes. It was fun to get girly stuff
this time around. :) I'm now stocked up on enough onesies, sleepers, & outfits for the first 6 months or so.

I also bought:
a new crib bedding set (not really necessary but it was a Target 70% off find)
crib mobile
blankets, swaddlers, & sleep sacks
new baby tub
towels & washclothes
a womb-sounds bear
a ton of diapers, nb - size 2
bottles & pacifiers
Beco Butterfly
double stroller

The only other things I think I might need are either a rock-n-play sleeper or a Nap nanny, in case the baby likes to sleep while slightly elevated like DS. If BF'ing is successful, I plan on getting a pump at some point too.

We still need....

pack n' play (that's what we plan to have her sleep in at first)
pack n' play sheets
crib mattress
crib sheets and mattress pads
changing table pad
a few bottles (I plan on BFing, so just planning on getting a few to see what works)
breast pump (although I may rent initially)
swing (don't really need this, but want it!)
Boppy
Diaper pail
Diaper bag
Some type of infant carrier
Stroller

...I'm due next month, but most of this stuff I plan to buy from my Amazon registry, and I have a couple more days before my 10% completion discount kicks in, so I refuse to buy anything until then!

*I'm totally not IN this thread, just lurking.*
I did want to mention to all of you to check for consignment sales in your area. We have one going on this week, and this stuff is SOOOO much cheaper at them than brand new, and most of the infant items are hardly used!

Yes! I can't wait until the season starts. I'm jealous you are having one so early. Most of ours are in March/April.

Absolutely! I am on a local swap board too, and am also monitoring Craigslist. Consignment season starts here in late Feb!

See?!? That's exactly what I'm saying!!!

:yeahthat:

Don't worry Melaine, I'm only two days behind you and in about the same spot if not worse! I thought having a DS again would mean I don't need much, um.....turns out I am not really sure where DS's0-3 month clothes went unless I threw them away because they got stained. I've found a few but DS was born in opposite seasons so. Need clothes anyway.

Double stroller
Bottle nipples
Pacifiers
Crib
Crib bedding
Changing pad
Possibly rock n play
Swing motor (or new swing)
Monitor

Yikes!! We had our hospital tour yesterday and it sent me into a panic mode!!

Well we did it because we're going to a different hospital than we did we DS and my new Dr goes to two different hospitals. I was trying to figure out which hospital I wanted to go to and if I needed to switch drs within her practice because I think I favor the hospital she "will" go to but is farther for her and sometimes misses deliveries. So now I have to figure out what to do on the dr front. I didn't want to be switching later! I think you still have time. I would guess most of the other second time moms on the tour were probably a good month or two ahead of me.

All the birthing classes in my area are full or conflict with our one vacation.

I bought some clothes this weekend, but still need more
Crib
Crib mattress
Crib bedding
Cosleeper, mattress, bedding
Pouch carrier
Non pink cloth diapers
Bath stuff
Breast pump
Bottles and storage bottles
Deep freezer
Bassinet attachment for stroller
Shower spray for diapers
Changing pad
Pacifiers
More stuff I can't think of

Right there with you in that boat. I think we need the last minute pressure to push us to make a decision.

Stuff I still need:

nursery furniture
crib bedding
nursery decor
play mat (thanks pp for reminding me. DS's was trashed by the time he got through with it)
replacement parts for breast pump
check if bassinett I borrowed from friend for DS is still available. if not, bassinett
bibs
burp cloths
swaddle blankets
diapers
monitor for baby's room
clothes, clothes, clothes!

Trying not to buy too many clothes just yet...waiting to see what I get as gifts, but as I won't have a shower this time around, probably won't get much until she is born. So I guess I'll have to decide what we will need right away and what can wait. Likely will wait a bit longer to see how she's measuring to find out if I will need newborn or 0-3 mo clothes.

I totally blanked on scheduling a hospital tour until way too late and couldn't get in. I just called and confirmed what time the main doors close (in which case we need to go in through the ER). I delivered DS at the same hospital, so I'm hoping I just remember the drill when the time comes. Oh well.

The only things we have are a crib/mattress and borrowed bassinet. Oh, I did buy a few outfits after the ultrasound, maybe 3 or 4? I'm just not motivated yet!

No name for her either!

heya ladies!

Still keeping the little girl in the cooker here! Modified bedrest since week 18, strict since week 25 and we're 31w 5d today! Phew!

I had the "Ohmigod" around week 25 when I realized I wouldn't be able to get around as I'd anticipated. We had most of the big stuff from my ds (6 yrs), but there was a LOT that seemed to creep up on me and I just felt so much better when I just took care of it!

The only really big thing that we HAD to get was an Arm's reach co-sleeper. I'd borrowed one from my sis in-law for ds and although she still has it, it's a million miles away in another state and I can't get there to visit. (This also meant NO family showers which sucks, but it is what it is, right?) I picked one up on CL a few weeks ago for $80, which I thought was worth the hassle of picking up and washing (ok, DH had to do all that but it's still significant savings). With the money I saved on the co-sleeper I bought a used JJB diaper bag, which I'm inordinately excited about.

I picked up a good amount of layette clothes during the gymboree sale (online, couldn't get to the red balloon sale in store, which sucked too). I have the necessities for clothing. I would *hope* some outfits will come in here and there.

Honestly I was losing sleep about "what would we do" so I just bought most of it myself. I found bargains when I could but I do sleep better knowing that if I had her today (totally not planning on that but it's been a bum-py road) we'd not have to panic.

I do need to find storage bins somewhere. I've acquired more clothes than I can hang up and don't plan on a dresser, at least yet. We have an Ikea unit with 4 or so baskets but those clothes really take up space!

I did end up registering on amazon. I kept thinking I could get to Target or Buybuybaby but this could only happen if hubs took me and wheeled me around. It just didn't happen. I'm sure in-laws will be irritated but hey, it is what it is. I still have a mother-in-law who refuses to buy ANYTHING over the internet, what a KICK!

The next sorry realization is that there won't be anyone other than hubs to help me after delivery. My mother in law was here for about a week after ds and it was so fantastic. She did everything and we were able to really relax, heal (and I had mucho healing to do) and enjoy. I have a brother in law who is recovering from brain surgery, and it isn't going well. The hospital mentioned last week that after a few weeks stay longer they'll have to nurse him at in law's house (she was a nurse back in the day), nursing home, or hospice. He's 48 years old.

Then again, this baby wasn't supposed to happen. We had just finished all of our homestudy paperwork and we're waiting for the adoption call when I realized I (gasp!) was pregnant. What a weird ride. All in all, we have so much to be grateful for.

Now cook, all you babies, cook!

For anyone who wants to buy a rock n play, they are really awesome, but the plastic is kind of hard. I padded mine with a few receiving blankets, but I've seen other people use a snuzzler.

Thanks, Mommylamb (rubbing baby belly).

I've read that people love those rock n plays but i've also read that it can lead to serious flat head issues (like numerous cases of kids having to wear helmets). If I used one I'd sure be cautious on how long little one stayed in it. Perhaps they've modified them to solve this problem???

I've read that too, but like you said just don't let them stay in one long and rotate their head. DS had severe reflux and the only place he could sleep at night was in the swing because it reclined (they came out with this when he was a year:p) he ended up with a slightly flat head that resolved itself with plenty of tummy time. I think anything that a baby lays in for awhile can cause flat head.

We are using one, but after reading the reviews on Amazon, I also bought a Boppy Noggin Nest and we are using it in the Rock N Play. I haven't seen any signs of flat head and he's been sleeping in it every night for about 3 weeks.

I think this, like so many other things, is an issue of over use by some people. People told me that DD would get a flat head because she slept in a swing every night for the first 6 weeks (that was the only place she would sleep at night). But she was up every 2 to 3 hours to eat and have a diaper change, and during the day I wore her, held her, did floor/tummy time with her etc. and she has a gorgeous round head with no helmet.

As for what I still have to get, I really only need some bottle nipples and the double stroller at this point. DD2 is due the same month as DD1, so I have tons of clothes. I have ordered room furniture for DD2 which might not come until after she is born, but DD1 didn't use her room at all for the first few months, so I am not worried.

My baby became sort of flat headed. My ped sent me to go see someone, by the specialist said it would go back on its own. It did, but it took a while. I don't believe I overused it.

There was a similar post a couple of weeks ago, and I posted a long list of things http://windsorpeak.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=423224&highlight=amazon+list&page=2 Well I was talking on the phone with my BFF and she pointed out more stuff that I wasn't considering. Yikes!

I haven't bought anything yet since we're waiting to find out the gender. I keep thinking I should open al the containers with DS's stuff to check what we have and what condition it's in, but I keep procrastinating every time I walk into our storage unit and see how many boxes I have.

Here's the list that helped me -
- Carseats (hospital won't sign baby's discharge papers before looking at their carseat...i think its required by law),
- crib, mattress(atleast 150 coil)
- diapers&wipes (though my hospital gave us enough supply that lasted atleast a few months),
- muslin swaddling blanket (www.auraweavers.com). These are my favorites.
- Diaper genie (www.diapergenie.com)(definitely get this. during winters when the windows will be closed all day long, u'll so need this)
- nursing bras and nursing pads,
- babies outfits (buy enough that you don't have to worry about laundry every second day) and try to get as many outfits that opens from the front (its easier for new moms), dont bother to spend on too many fancy outfits - - good cotton pajamas
- booties, mittens
- sweaters
- caps
- we bought cradle swing for Rishaan and it was a savior (we totally love it) (iFsher-Price Lil' Lamb Dream Swing (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3090973)
- Bottle warmer
- bottles
- drying rack
- sterilizer (even if u plan to nurse them both it might be possible that u'll end up giving them bottles for one of their feeds, so I'd suggest keep this ready as well)
- Breatpump (i pumped quite often so for me this goes on the priority list)
- wipes warmer
- Lots of burp cloths
- wash cloths
- towels
- Bathwash, body lotion, diaper rash lotion
