Forty five dollars (no dash) or $45

Forty five dollars. Unless it's a technical piece of writing, in which case I would say $45.

it depends upon whose standards you are aiming to please. The guidelines for APA/MLA, etc. vary, so you really should refer to a style guide.

I consult OWL at purdue a lot. (http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/593/01/) ETA: when I don't have a specific guide I'm supposed to follow.

I agree that consulting a style guide would be best.

Personally, I would choose "$45," but if I spelled out "forty-five dollars," I would use a hyphen as the OP did.

I vote option c.

I'd write it and use the hyphen. I learned it with a hyphen. Has that changed?
