Saw Hangover 2 last night and I can't believe I've never heard "The Downeaster Alexa" before (and I'm a fan). Playing it all day, today. I also discovered "Feels Like Home" and later learned that one was in a movie soundtrack, too.
Ever 'discovered'' a cool/beautiful/inspiring (vocal OR instrumental) song while watching a movie?

I have the soundtrack to Once, which I listen to all the time. It's amazing.

Older (crappy) movie, Catch and Release, helped me discover Joshua Radin, especially the song "What if You". The soundtrack was the only good thing about that movie.

eta- last night I heard Kathleen Edwards on NPR singing "A Soft Place to Land" and was moved. Check it out.

I was going to put the same thing. Loved the movie and the soundtrack.
We got to see Glen Hansard at the Pearl Jam 20 festival in Sept. He was awesome. One night he brought Eddie Vedder up to sing Falling Slowly with him. We will be seeing Glen again in May when he tours with Eddie Vedder. I'm so excite!

That sounds awesome! I saw him + the girl as The Swell Season in Central Park in NYC on my birthday. Such a gorgeous song.

ETA: and of course, Damien Rice from Closer. That CD was the soundtrack of my divorce :( but so beautiful

Bonnie Raitt's "Fearless Love".
They are playing it in the background when both couples go back to the house to hookup/talk.
I had to go look it up after I heard it!
Good after dinner, wine, let's maybe hook-up song. :54:

So many songs from soundtracks!

There is a song from an older movie called "Career Opportunities" by Soho. So poppy and sing-along-able. Loved it when I heard it. Love it still! :)

And the song that Tina Fey and Steve Carrell strip to in "Date Night" is a great one by Ceelo.

The song "Daughter" at the end of the movie "Knocked Up". Its a lovely song.

I also love the soundtrack from "When a Man Loves a Woman" with Meg Ryan and Andy Garcia and the soundtrack from the movie "Realty Bites" has a wide variety of really good music.

My hipster friends would :ROTFLMAO: but I discovered my favorite band of all time (Verve) in a really bad movie (Sliver) :bag:. I'm talking about "sell all my belongings and follow them on tour" favorite. I was already a big fan of Britpop and shoegaze bands but I hadn't heard them yet. DD's first airplane trip was to fly to the reunion tour at Coachella Fest in 2008. I was 6mo pregnant with DS at the time. :jammin:

Funny enough, the song in the movie, Star Sail, is still my favorite of them all.

Oh, I just saw this video last night and LOVED it! I am so jealous you saw it live

I am a huge fan of soundtracks BTW. I really liked the Garden State soundtrack back in the day.

Great thread OP!!

The soundtrack for About a Boy (http://youtu.be/urmIrfnUyCw) by artist Badly Drawn Boy. That led me to buy every album he's ever done. I love him.

Elliott Smith's song in the Royal Tenenbaums (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyVQrl_546g).

I thought the soundtrack from the movie Drive was fantastic. It had a catchy, 80's vibe to it. I especially like the song "A Real Hero" from it.

I'm surprised I'd never noticed this one before.

And also "It Is You I Have Loved" by Dana Glover

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nIctUQ2hzs

Since DH and I reunited after 20 years apart, that song means the world to me.

And, since he is most often found on the other side of the world from me:

Jason Wade's "You Belong to Me"

The original Shrek soundtrack is one of the best collections ever.

Second only to Shrek is the Pretty in Pink soundtrack, a classic, known not just for "Pretty in Pink" by the Psychedelic Furs and "If You Leave" by OMD, but these two lesser known gems.

"Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" by The Smiths

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vw753owPS4

(Such a beautiful song that was also featured as an instrumental in my favorite movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off.")

"Wouldn't It Be Good" by Danny Hutton Hitters

Okay, my last ones, I swear.

Stuart Little. Seriously, a sweet movie and the music was fantastic, especially this one, perfect for a couple who spends so little time together.

Trisha Yearwood's "You're Where I Belong"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zdH0t5t2CU

And from of all places, Clerks 2, I found the song that describes me the best! It's my ringtone when DH calls:

"Everything" by Alanis Morissette

The entire soundtrack was just lovely - very techno sounding except for one song: "Oh, My Love" - http://www.nme.com/nme-video/youtube/id/tg0jOpr1Uhk/search/Katyna%20Ranieri

That thing just haunts me.

Singles, the soundtrack. It was so great- Smashing Pumpkims, Pearl Jam, Chris Cornell, Pixies- so awesome.

Add me to the Garden State fans as well.

I fell in love with "El Salam" by Hakim from Vanity Fair. So catchy and upbeat but I have no idea what they are singing!

Ah, the 80s...

If we're going back to the 80s both Top Gun and Footloose got a lot of play in my house, but then they were soundtrack movies.

Given DH's (and DS's) predilection for cajun/zydeco it's no surprise The Princess and the Frog soundtrack gets heavy play in our cars.

At the risk of totally dating myself...DH and I used to listen to the "Pulp Fiction" soundtrack all the time ;)

I also discovered Nina Simone from the movie "The Thomas Crowne Affair"... Love her voice...

I think we own the "Reality Bites" soundtrack as well...

:yeahthat:

If you watch Singles, the scene where they have the car accident is filmed in my current hood (actually at the biggest nearby intersection to our house). DH and I noticed it a couple of years ago.

I just watched The Big Chill. Classic for so many great songs.

Someone Like You, Van Morrison, featured in Bridget Jones. Became our first dance at our wedding.

Ah, YES! The soundtrack to Monsoon Wedding was good for upbeat music with lyrics that say who-knows-what. Here's an example:

I'll add more later, but I :heartbeat::heartbeat::heartbeat: the instrumental soundtrack to Cider House Rules. They used it in those Discover Michigan ads that have been around for the last few years, and I never tired of Tim Allen telling me to come to Michigan because I got to hear the music. I also love the instrumental soundtrack to Little Women-- the one with Claire Danes, Winona Ryder, etc.

Vienna by Billy Joel in 13 Going on 30.
Beyond the Sea by Bobby Darrin from Life Less Ordinary (the first movie I ever saw with DH; this became my favorite song for a long while; it made me smile every time I heard it:))
She's the One movie soundtrack by Tom Petty (the whole album is great if you are a Tom Petty fan; I just can't pick one song)
The Top Gun Soundtrack, I still have the tape I bought in 1986. So 1980s but do good! I have it on cd now.

I can't stand Down Easter Alexa, it is on his Storm Front cd.

The score to the movie Tron: Legacy. It's just this superb blend of electronic and orchestral music, but more importantly it introduced me to Daft Punk which in turn helped expand my tastes in electronic music (I'm sure to many people that isn't saying much! :D ).

Add me to this list! I still really like the Shins, and that's where I first heard them. The movie was also filmed partly in my ILs neighborhood, so we watched the filming one day, which was pretty cool.

"Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" by The Smiths

I love that song! It has a lot of meaning to DH and me, so everytime I hear it (or someone mentions it, even) I feel a little warm and fuzzy inside. So, thanks for the pick me up!

Another "Garden State" fan. LOVE The Shins and first heard of them because of that movie (before I saw the movie though). Have seen them in concert several times.

Elliott Smith songs from "Good Will Hunting". Also saw him in concert, a couple years after the movie came out.

The Piano instrumentals from "The Piano" are haunting.

Aimee Mann songs from "Magnolia"

"Secret Garden" by Bruce Springsteen. I first heard it in "Jerry Maguire"

The song at the end of "Crazy Heart", "The Weary Kind" I think it's called, is excellent--even though Colin Farrell sings it!

Approximately 99% of my college classmates owned "Reality Bites" and "Pulp Fiction" soundtracks, and most of those songs were new to me when I heard them in those movies. I didn't really love all of them though.

Also, I knew of the band "The Cars" and their music, but did not know about the song "Moving in Stereo" until I saw Fast Times at Ridgemont High (years after it originally came out, I'm not THAT old). Now every time I hear it I immediately associate it with the Phoebe Cates pool scene!! (Actually, the whole Ridgemont High soundtrack was pretty awesome).

Peter Gabriel's "Passion", which is the soundtrack from Martin Scorsese's "The Last Temptation of Christ".
The soundtracks to "Grosse Pointe Blank", "Go" and "21" (There is a version of "You Can't Always Get What You Want" by The Rolling Stones that is funky and fabulous!)
I second the "Into the Wild" soundtrack!!!
Music from "The Red Violin"
The soundtrack from the little-known but FANTASTIC movie "The Legend of 1900". It's just brilliant and moving and original... if you haven't ever seen the film, please try to!!!
