Get them one of these. They are graphite and polymer so they don't rub off on your hand. I saw tried today at a museum and it's SO cool. Writes like a pencil, smooth and soft. The one I tried had been out for 6 months and it looked brand new. They are said to last 7-9 years.

This is perfect! My mother's best friend is painting some canvases of the Sesame Street characters for DS and I was *JUST* thinking about what I should get her for a nice thank you gift.
