Update: So today went well! He was actually ok talking and playing with the 2 therapists that came. He's usually not great with strangers. The initial feedback is that he is within the "normal" range for everything, with a slight speech delay. They said if there are still concerns they would test him again after he turns 3 in a couple of months.

I really appreciate all the positive thoughts today. I really think they helped.

Original post:
My son has an EIP evaluation tomorrow. I’m really hoping this helps us figure how to deal with his behavioral challenges – he doesn’t do well with following direction and his school suggested an EIP. I just don’t know what to expect from this process and that’s causing a lot of anxiety. Hoping tomorrow goes smoothly.

 Hugs and mojo. Like I mentioned in the other thread, we've got a screening on Friday, and I have doubts about DS even going into a strange place or talking at all for strangers.

I have the same concern about DS. I can't imagine him taking direction from a stranger. He has made great strides in the past 3-4 months, but I worry so much about him and his ability to follow direction and connect with others.

Good luck tomorrow! I'm not sure what you mean by EIP (you don't mean IEP, do you?)- are you referring to Early Intervention? Do you know what kind of evaluation are they doing- speech, ot, pt, ed? In any case, just know that many children don't respond well to new people and environments so its common for kids to shut down somewhat or be uncooperative at an eval. This won't suprise the evaluators, and I'm sure they will deal with him well. Lots of mojo!!

Good Luck for the evaluation! My son enjoyed his evals as a toddler/preschooler. They involve a lot of playing games and other activities little kids find fun.

It is for Early Intervention and I think it's just a general eval. Our concerns are how he deals with transitions and a speech delay. He has always liked to play on his own (he very rarely interacts with other kids), but when you try to change his activity- like go from playing with puzzles to eating lunch he melts down. This is ok at home, not great but we can manage it, but it is really hard when he is with a group which is why his preschool suggested having him tested.

Thanks for all the positive thoughts. This feels like a big step for us and I'm nervous, but hopeful.

Many good thoughts headed your way. My son had to do an eval when he was a toddler and he didn't know anything different other than some people wanted to play with and talk to him....he seemed to have fun with it.

Good luck!
