They were backed up on a camera card and a flash. Both seem to also be gone. Will look tomorrow. We left. Everything was trashed. Very hard to tell if they missed the laptop.

Oh my gosh. So so sorry. That is awful. Such a violation not only of your home, but of your sense of security. I really hope you can find the laptop or one of the backups. Same thing happened to us--someone broke into our house about 5 years ago while we were away and stole our computer and our backup hard drive with all our pictures. And some other stuff like the TV, stereo equipment etc. but it was the pics I missed most. It was pre-kids though, thank goodness. We keep our backup drive in a safe deposit box now.

Have you filed the police report yet? In our case they eventually caught the people (apparently they were going around robbing lots of houses around here), and we did get the hard drive back but it was erased and we could not recover the pics. We had most of the pics on backup CD's though, except for the previous year. I really, really hope you can get your pics back somehow. Did you ever post any on Facebook or Shutterfly etc.?

Also make sure to call your credit card companies and one of the credit agencies (Experian, etc) to put a temporary fraud alert on your account so that nobody can open credit lines in your name (since they probably have your info from the computer). Someone tried to get a cell phone in my name so the 3 month temporary freeze got upgraded to a permanent 7 year freeze. So every time I try to get a loan or open a credit card, they have to call me and ask me questions to verify my identity first.

We had another break-in once even earlier than that when we were living in the city and it was in the middle of the night and someone was standing in our bedroom. I woke up and saw a light and when I called out, he ran off. We are so lucky nothing worse happened, it was so scary.

It is possible to retrieve erased data, in case you find it, but it's wiped clean. however, it would be quite expensive. I hope your cards are lying around somewhere.

I know how sick you are feeling about losing the pictures. I lost all the pictures on my laptop - 4 years of baby/toddler years and it hurt like I was grieving the loss of life.

Not sure if you have pawn shops around but if so I would start calling them just in case your stuff pops up there. My car was broken into a couple years ago and I had my purse in the car with my grandma's antique ring...my mom started calling pawn shops in the area first thing in the morning and sure enough the ring showed up at a local pawn shop that afternoon. Of course I never got back any of my other stuff but they have caught two of the people in connection with the break in but nothing has come of it yet...

i am so sorry. 6 months before i was supposed to graduate/finish my thesis my laptop was stolen out of my office. it definitely makes you feel so violated, it sucks. i was lucky that all my files were backed up on a department server, but still..it's infuriating.

They didn't take the laptop cord, so the laptop can't be pawned etc. :(. I'm working on backing up what we still have. I have everything after her 2nd birthday, so that is something. I'm working on getting copies of what others have. Sadly, we lived with no family/friends nearby for the first 20 months of DD's life so I thunk I had the only pics :(. Thanks for the continued prayers and positive thoughts. I'm not in a good place right now. I'm pregnant and I list my best friend suddenly last Sat. When it rains it pours :(. Thank you again.

Did you ever print any? You might find the prints. . . or you might find that the place that printed them still has them electronically (I know Walmart does).

Did you ever email the best ones to those far-away family members?

Sorry this happened. I'm not sure I understand the statement about the laptop not being able to be pawned. aftermarket cords are easily obtainable. I'd still check the pawn shopw if you haven't already - can you give them a copy of your police report of things to watch out for??
