Can you recommend some specific poems for my 7 yr. old son
to read aloud to his 1st grade class?

To practice reading fluency, the kids are going to have Poetry Parties
on Fridays. Each child will have to read a little poem to the class.

I need some help finding some poems!!

Thanks!!!

The boys love the poems in Dirt On My Shirt by Jeff Foxworthy. They would be right up your Ds's alley :) We checked it out from the library and then ended up getting our own copy. Ds2 loves the Noises one!!!

Check out the author Jack Prelutsky. He is great and has lots and lots of poetry books. I'm not sure of your DS's reading level--some are easier than others for read aloud purposes. I love poetry!

We love Jack Prelutsky here. One of our favorites is about a goldfish

My fish was small, my fish was gold
But now my fish is still and cold
My fish will no more splash and splish
My fish is dead, I flushed my fish.

Oh dear. We just had this happen :bag

Not sure that my 6 yr old will appreciate the poem quite so soon, but it is apt!

DS1 and I were just at the library a couple of hours ago looking at the poetry books (among other things.) I think we looked at all of the authors mentioned here! We went with one of the Shel Silverstein books, but now I want to go read some of the others.

Lobster Quadrille or something else by Lewis Carroll?

When he develops more confidence, sure. (Personally, I am partial to 'Beautiful Soup' and 'Father William' and have had 'Jabberwocky' memorized since I was very young. During my last declamation competition in high school, I used 'The Walrus and the Carpenter' as one of my poetry interpretation pieces.)

If he's able to get into Lewis Carroll, he might also enjoy Edward Lear (most famous for 'The Owl and the Pussycat' but there are several shorter poems, including 'How Pleasant to Know Mr. Lear', that I enjoy!)

DS really enjoys "The Hunting of the Snark", but that's a major undertaking.

He also likes the Dirt on My Shirt book by Jeff Foxworthy that a PP mentioned.
