My doctor prescribed medication around this time last year to treat my IBS symptoms (stomach cramps, gassiness, bloated feeling, etc.) Its Hyoscyamine tablets. When I took it last spring, it did help the cramping to stop and she had said that I could slowly wean myself off of it after a few months if it was working. I think I slowly cut the dosage down then stopped it last fall and I was good to go for awhile. But now the cramps are back :( I started taking the pills again but I hate the horrible dry mouth I get from it. So I've been researching other remedies and read about pepperming oil. Came across this specifically that gets good reviews (Heather's Tummy Tamers Peppermint Oil capsules): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002UDK4Q/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A23YP9T6PP0V1I

Was just curious if anyone else has tried peppermint and what the results were? Or any other suggestions? I've thought about probiotics, but know nothing about them, like what kind is best, etc. When I had asked my doctor about them she said just to eat yogurt everyday. I've been trying to get the Stonyfield Yogurt because I thought I read somewhere that it has more/better probiotics than other yogurts? Or what about Activia, is that better?

I have suffered from IBS and found that peppermint tea sometimes helps with flare ups, so I suspect the peppermint capsules would help as well. The solution that really worked for me, though, was the IBS Audio Program 100, which is an self hypnotherapy program. I felt so much better that I didn't even have to finish the full 100 day program (IIRC, I think I got to about 80 days or so). Now, on the rare occasion that I am stressed and feel like my symptoms might be returning, I listen to one of the CD tracks as a refresher and am good to go.

There's also a lot of good information on IBS on this site (check out the News & Reviews, message boards, etc.)

Good luck finding something that works for you!

I have not tried peppermint oil for IBS. I have tried various probiotics for my IBS and GI yeast overgrowth after DD2 was born. Natren tends to be the most recommended brand, but I found that Fivelac probiotics (a lemony powder packet you place right on your tongue) worked by far the best for me.

I hope you feel better soon!
