View Full Version : When did your DC give up the 2nd nap?

DS's morning nap has moved later and later. He naps reliably from 11:30 to about 1:00. The 2nd nap is iffy, but when he doesn't get it, he's pretty fussy. When did your DC drop nap 2? I realize we may have to move up the bedtime to make it through the day, or maybe we need to try to make the AM nap earlier. Daycare wants the nap at 11:30, so that's part of the issue.

Is 12 mo on the early side for one nap only, or does that sound about right to you?

Sounds a bit early to me, but of course every kid is different. :) My DS is 16 months and still sometimes naps twice in a day- it all depends on what time he gets up for the day (ranges from about 6:30-8 a.m.).

For a while he was getting up around 7:30 or 8 and not napping until after lunch, so around the 12:30-1:30 range (and would sleep for about 2 hours). This was awesome because we could go do something all morning (children's museum, zoo, etc.).

Now that I've signed us up for a morning ECFE class, he's of course going back and forth on his naps, often still napping in the morning (today was 1.5 hours from 10-11:30 and then a couple of little 30 minute naps later in the day). He's always pretty much ready for bed by 6:30 or so, and I stay at home with him and his sister, so unfortunately we don't have much of a predictable nap time like we would if he were in daycare. ;)

From what I've read it's recommended that kids get 2 naps up until around 18 months. Of course that is a generalization and not all kids need 2 for that long.

My DD is definitely outside of the norm in that she is still taking 2 naps at nearly 2 years old. I don't know how much longer she'll do it but we're just going with the flow and figure she'll tell us when she doesn't want both naps.

I should clarify though... she goes to daycare part time and when she's there she only takes one nap, but at home she does two.

My DD1 dropped all naps at 6 months old.

My DD2 dropped the second nap at 7 months old, but I feel very lucky that we still get 1 nap!

Both mine went down to 1 nap around 12-14 months. Not something I pushed, believe me.

We are currently transitioning. The past week DD has been briefly waking early (around 6:00) but not crying and if I leave her, she'll go back to bed until 9ish. Then I keep her up until around 12:45 and she naps until 3:15 ish. If she wakes before 7 and is really up I have her do a short nap at 8:45-9:45 and then another nap 1:30-3:30. But we haven't done that in around 2 weeks now so I am hoping we stick with 1 nap. She does get tired around 12:30 but I have to drop DS at pre-k at 12:40 so I do what I can to keep her up until we get home.

All 3 of mine dropped their morning nap between 10-12 months of age. I didn't push it, but the morning nap got later and later and eventually sort of merged with the afternoon nap.

My DS1 was a good napper. Dropped his 2nd nap at 18 months... DS2 is another story. I think he never had good 2nd nap, it was just a cat nap. At some point I gave up on guarding his nap and move him to solid 1 nap together with his brother at about 11-12 months. That worked pretty well for me, because I had a brake and could nap myself;)

Around 6 months. But then he napped from 1:30-5:00 until he was almost 4 so there were no complaints from me. Even when he napped in the morning, it was only for one hour or so.

Ds was at one nap by 13.5 months. Dd went to one nap around 14 months. I have known kids who switched around a year.

DD (20 months) dropped her morning nap around 12-14 months. Her afternoon nap now averages about 3 hours.

Mine DD dropped hers right before a year, probably 11 months or so. I remember researching it and found plenty examples of kids that dropped their first one that early (and she would wake up b/t 6:30 and 7:30 or so most days, so it wasn't like she was sleeping in much later). She went into an 18 month preschool class from 9-12noon so none of the kids in the class were having morning naps then, so I think you are right in the norm for giving it up.

We gave up the afternoon nap pretty early too, the summer of 2.5. She would still take an afternoon nap if we let her "rest" for too long, but she would then be up until 10 or later at night. The best thing I did was read on this board that when bedtime slips too late like that, you can help your child drop the afternoon nap. It was a blissful 4 months of her falling asleep at 7 pm after that.

DS transitioned to one nap at around 13 months. During the transition phase, he still took the morning nap and didn't sleep in the afternoon, so we just started moving his morning nap later and later until it became more of a mid-day nap. He went from naps at 9 and 1 to one nap around 11:30 or 12. He is currently trying to drop his afternoon nap (turned 2 last week). We still put him down to "rest" and he actually sleeps ~2 or 3 days per week. When he naps, bedtime is around 7:30-8, and when he doesn't, it's 6:30-7. And with no nap he is sleeping utill 8-8:30 in the morning instead of 7-7:30 like before.

DD2 dropped her second nap around 11 months but I think a lot of that has to do with DHs schedule for pick up and drop off of DD1.
Good news is that her one nap a day is 2.5 hours and she sleeps 13 hours a night.

DS napped twice until age 2.

DD never reliably napped twice. Once we stopped trying to force her to nap in the mornings (10 months), life got better for all of us.

My DD dropped her morning nap before her first birthday.

:yeahthat: And the single nap has been dying a slow death since before 2. :crying: Mostly slow because I won't give it up.

Around 13 months when she moved up to the waddler room at school. She would take about an hour in the morning and maybe an hour in the afternoon but now naps reliably (at school only though) for 2 hours.

DD dropped hers somewhere around 10-13 months. It was a slow death and some days she would take the afternoon nap and some days absolutely not. Basically her morning nap started lasting longer and then we had to gradually transition the timing of it. DD generally naps from 11:40-1:30 now, and goes to bed between 7:30-8:00. I'd like to put her to bed earlier but she won't do it.

Both of my girls gave up their morning nap by around 14-15 months old. DD2 however will still sometimes take her main nap between 11 and 2 vs. 12 and 3.

DD dropped her 2nd nap around 12_14 months and naps from 12 - 2ish at daycare. She goes to bed at 7pm and gets up around 6am the next day. She will take her naps early or get a second nap is she needs it. She is currently 21 months.

We have been transitioning to one nap for a few months already, and DS is just 12 months. Right now I let him take a short nap in the morning (wake him after 30 minutes), and then he takes a long nap in the afternoon. He cant make it to the afternoon yet without a nap, but a long nap in the morning completely messes up his nights. We'll see how long this works...I feel like I am constantly micromanaging his sleep.

Our son dropped his late afternoon nap around 10 mos I believe, and now (at 17 mos) is taking only one nap beginning around 11:30 or noon. He naps for about 1.5 to 2 hrs, usually longer at daycare than at home (of course!). Our son was never good at napping, though it makes me feel better reading these posts to see others having similar napping patterns right now. I always envied those parents whose kids could nap for 3 hrs straight! Oh the things I could get done with that time.... Also, since his naps are pretty short, he goes to bed around 7pm and wakes around 6am. No way I could put him down later after a long, tiring day at daycare!
