I have very little counter space in what looks like a decent sized kitchen. I have a nice newer gas range/oven with heavy cast iron two-piece grates.

Is there a solid surface that can be put over the range grates to give me some more prep space? Does something like that even exist? I can't really use the range space to prep things, plus it would help keep the area under the grates cleaner when the range isn't in use.

Did any of that make any sense to anyone?

I have the same exact problem and if I need some extra space, I use one of my commercial quality baking sheets on top of my gas grates. It is just a temporary fix though, nothing permanent. I used to se covers for my grates, but that was an older style gas stove, the newer style ones now cover the entire top of the stove, so there isn't a cover for it. I would actually love it if these stoves had a lid, so that the lid (when hinged up), could serve as a splash guard AND extra space. Someone needs to invent that, lol.

Something like this is what I'm thinking, but I'm not sure that one would clear the grates on my range. I like Hellokitty's idea of a hinged top...I'm searching on Amazon now...thanks!

When we lived overseas, our gas range (6 burner) had a glass "lid" on hinges that folded down for additional prep space when not in use. It was pretty cool actually. But I've never seen a range like that in the states.

Here are 2 companies that make covers, it does exist:

This reminds me of the cover that is on the range in our trailer...not sure if they make them for houses or not.

That's what I'm looking for! They're kinda pricey, but they might just be worth it.

I like that one - I could use extra prep space too. It can't be used with the oven on, or after the burners are in us...mmm, I'll have to think about how often I use the stove top. It would mean prepping there and then moving it to somewhere else.

Not 'pretty', but my parents have a piece of laminate countertop that was the cutout from a sink area. They set it on the (cool) stove for extra counter space.

I went to the Amazon link and this one came up for over the sink. Totally cool for prepping fruits and vegetables.

ETA: Some of the reviewers say they use it over their stove, too.

My aunt has something similar that she uses when she hosts parties. It's a piece of leftover something (plywood? mdf?) cut to size. She put contact paper on the top and then can use it to set out food buffet style across her counter.

I often use a large baking sheet or cutting board.

We have a couple of Corain cutting boards that I put on top of my burners when they aren't in use. I got them from a Corain installer who made them from leftover material from a kitchen renovation. I don't remember how much they were but it was pretty inexpensive.
