P&PT request....DS2 going for open heart surgery tomorrow....He's Home!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi all, I wrote a month back regarding DS2 and his open heart surgery. Tomorrow is the big day, and DH and I are nervous wrecks. Please send any prayers or positive thoughts his way. They will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Update- DS2 is in surgery now, we had a bit of a delay due to an emergency surgery ahead of us. I will update later. Thank you so much for our replies, it really helps to read them.

Update 2- DS2 is almost done in OR, surgery went well. doctor feels optimistic for overall outcome. we should see DS2 in the next hour or so in the ICU

Update 3 - DS2 is in the ICU and stable. We are hoping the breathing tube comes out tonight and hopefully most of the other invasive catheters will be discontinued tomorrow. I'll update again tomorrow. I just wanted to add that you guys are wonderful, I read your posts throughout the day and it gave me strength. thanks

Update 4- Sorry I am updating late in the day. DS2's breathing tube was discontinued last night and he did great. A few more lines/catheters were also discontinued, but he still has 3 IV's and a chest tube. He did great getting out of bed into a recliner chair, but of course he was nervous and had some pain and tears. He has been a little nauseous, but was able to tolerate some chicken soup and juice for lunch, and so far it has not made its reappearance :) We are still in the ICU, perhaps being moved later today to a regular patient room. Overall his spirits are good, but it's hard to see him in pain and him telling me "I'm trying not to cry". He is sleeping in bed now and it seems to be a more restful sleep than he has had since the surgery. Thanks for you continued thoughts.

Update 5- DS2 had a pretty good night once we got his pain under control. Today was tough because he had to get up and move around a bit, and there were a lot of tears and sadness because of the discomfort. His chest tube was removed (yea!) and we were told that his mood and outlook should improve greatly afterwards because he would be so much more comfortable. DH and I switched shifts today, so I am home now. I got to see DS2 on skype around dinner time, and he was definitely improved. Smiling and making some jokes- it seems like it's been a long time since I've seen him like that. I can't believe all this has occurred in just over 48 hours. I'll probably update when he is ready to leave the hospital (sometime next week), so I'll be quiet online for a few days. Thanks for keeping us in your thoughts.

Final update- He's home!!!!!!!! DS2 is doing great and although we still have some issues to follow up on, I wanted to let you know that all of your thoughts and prayers really helped during the last week, and so from the bottom of my heart I want to say "Thank You!" to all of you :love5:

Wow, I was just thinking about your DS this morning on my way to work. (I had to drop my DD's emergency medical contacts form off at daycare today, so her heart was on my mind.)

It's always rougher on the parents and don't worry if he cries when he comes out of the anaesthesia; they told us at CHoP that's perfectly normal.

What a great update! It literally brings me to tears thinking about you seeing him in pain and saying he's trying not to cry. Having been through 4 major surgeries myself relatively recently, I can tell you that the worst is behind you. If he's already gotten out of bed to the chair, that is HUGE... the first time doing that for me is always awful, I usually throw up and nearly pass out. Sounds like he is doing GREAT, and what a blessing to see him sleeping peacefully. I hope they continue to take good care of him and you, and prayers that you will move out of ICU today and recovery proceeds smoothly and quickly!!! :grouphug:
