UPDATE-
I got the call on Tuesday! I went to the party on Friday night and it was awesome. Jon was there and everything. Bonus that it was in L.A. And not NYC. :) and I had the LBD ready thanks to this thread!
This was the dress I wore http://www.socialbliss.com/nordstromstore/laundry-by-shelli-segal-dresses-0-14-HA2TSMZZ/laundry-by-shelli-segal-embellished-cuff-jersey-shift-dress-laundry-by-shelli-segal-dresses-0-14-black-GQ2DCMZQHA
----------------------------

I was just day dreaming about getting a call from my brother about some fabulous party with Jon Hamm in attendance and that I needed to jump on a plane to NYC within a few hours, packed and ready to attend. (Completely plausible yet fictional daydream!)

But then I realized I really do not have that perfect little dress, black or otherwise that I could wear to such an event.

Do you have the "LBD" in your closet? If so can you provide a link or pic?

I have one. It's little, it's black, and it's a dress. But it's certainly not Jon Hamm-worthy. :ROTFLMAO:

ETA: It's this one, I wore it a couple of months ago to a Fashion Week event in Boston. Not sure if this link will work, but...

Cute!! Love the bold necklace with the little shift. Great look.

I'm not sure how to answer!

I have a black knee-length sleveless BCBG cocktail dress that is very versatile but boring.

I also have a black knee-length Max Mara wrap/tuxedo dress that is perfect for work cocktail parties. I love it because it is a powerful dress.

Finally, I have a D&G silky va-va-voom black dress that I bought on sale and have never worn because I got pregnant with DS1. I think I'd better find that dress now that I finally lost the baby weight and find an occassion to wear it! Maybe your bro can invite me too. ;)

I have several LBDs, but nothing quite Jon Hamm worthy. :wink2: I voted "I love it" because my regular date seems to like them a lot! ;) ;)

I have several since back when I was performing more I needed a lot of dresses, but definitely nothing Jon Hamm worthy! My fav is sort of a marilyn style halter, but as I'm looking at nordstrom I'm wondering if maybe it's time to be retired. The one I've been getting the most compliments from these days is last fall's version of this dress. Mine is not black though, it's purple:

If only I had an occasion to wear it that was work - like a date or party!

:) Me too!

I have one that I've owned for more than 10 years. It is so freaking hot it is amazing. Boat neck, long sleeve with split sleeves (so as I dance and move around my elbows pop out), rhinestone button on the cuffs, very, very, very short. Would you believe I bought it on the clearance rack at Sears for $13?

It is my all time favorite LBD.

I got this one last year and feel like I look great in it. I love wearing it and DH loves it when I wear it ;)

I have a couple. Several jersey w/ rouching. One from NR that has lace over a sheer layer. It's so delicate and feminine. I sometimes worry it's too "sweet". I don't have a lot of fab accessories, which apparently "make" the LBD. I need some good shoes, a prety evening clutch, a great, sparkly cuff and/or some killer earrings. I did pick up a shaped, satin trench by Tahari in sliver/pearly gray. I think it would work well for when I needmto wear a coat, which is a lot of the time here.

I think you'd look good in something one shoulder and figure conscious like this:

Because you're tall, and I've seen your Hawaii pics ;) (said not in a creepy way).

I voted "yes", but like everyone else, I'm not completely sure that any is really Jon Hamm-worthy.

One of my favorites is actually from BR - I think I got it my senior year of college (), but it IS actually timeless looking - kind of a silk chiffon material, V-neck, sleeveless, just above the knees - kind of a floaty feel to it. Definitely needs accessories, but looks great with a tan. I also have a basic black tube dress from J. Crew that I bought about 3 years after college - totally basic, but fits great and is a nice canvas for accessories. And then I have a va-va-va-voom Stella McCartney "miracle" dress that is black and navy. That one might be close to Jon Hamm-worthy. ;)

I voted mad men. I have several! They arent all black but I do have several fun cocktail dresses that I could break out for a fashion emergency. I have one go to dress that screams "ASHLEY WEAR ME" everytime I open the closet, I'd kill for a reason to wear it

I'd love to buy a David Meister dress. The drape on his dresses is so elegant and flattering.

See I really only have one cocktail dress that I really like right now, and I really don't have that black dress that I would reach for in a fashion emergency such as the one I dreamed up earlier today. :)

I always love the one shoulder look, but feel like it wouldn't work for me because I have to wear a bra and I have never found a strapless bra that my boobs look right in.

E, I think you need more than one LBD. A work to cocktail one like SK's, and then a va-va-voom Jon Hamm worthy one. :)

arivecchi and elektra i can SOOOOO see you in the black halo dress!!! you need one!!!!

i also have quite a few DVF wraps and other random dresses that are all cocktail appropriate that i can accessory up with my artsy fartsy vibe.

for instance this american apparel dress...
http://store.americanapparel.net/rsa7309.html

it comes in a host of colors and can look hipster or super chic depending on styling. its not super short if you aren't super tall. one of my BFFs has it and its not obscenely short on her, though I admit its very short on me

I don't have the legs to pull off a "little" dress, black or otherwise, so, no, I have no LBD and no intentions of getting one.

Besides, I look terrible in black, so there's very little of it in my wardrobe.

I have a black Banana Republic wrap dress, and a dressier one-shoulder chiffon dress also from BR.

I have a strapless black cocktail dress from Ann Taylor and a simple black crepe Maggie London sheath.

I have a long black halter dress by BCBG that I wore to my brothet's wedding and a casual long black tank dress from Gap.

I guess if I needed a LBD at the last minute, I'd be good to go.

I also have a black stretch lace cocktail dress from Zara that I wore this past New Years Eve, and yet another Banana Republic black jersey dress that I'd forgotten about until I was cleaning out my closet this morning.

I also have another long black (Laundry) dress that I wore on a cruise and to a wedding a decade ago. It is about a size too big so I am packing it up to donate. I have another black dress (Max Studio) with cream colored embroidery that is also a size too big (bought it to go to a wedding when DS2 was about six weeks old) so I'll add that one to the pile as well.

Yes it is a strapless black dress from Anne Klein that I got at Loehmanns for $12! I am not sure it fits right now, but it's one of those things that is soo timeless that I had to keep it.

I also have a less formal black jersey dress from Boden.

I like that dress from Shop Bop too.

It was very cool, yes! And just like I imagined. :) I was not loving the beard though. I was hoping he would look more like Don. ;) Nobody looked like their character except Harry Hamlin, and I did not recognize "Dawn" at all until I saw a picture of her later.
I think I need a new dress now, and I also need to start imagining better scenarios if they are actually going to come true like this!

I'm so happy for you!! Dreams DO come true!! haha. And that dress looks sexy and comfy at the same time.

But I thought you were planning to wear our twinsies TopShop dress to meet Jon: http://windsorpeak.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?438786-Fall-Shopping-Thread/page6&highlight=topshop (post #212).

I just remember that thread so vividly because that dress is so hot and I love mine so much. I wore mine to DH's xmas party last year. His younger co-worker showed his dad pictures of the party and he called me "The most beautiful woman" he has ever seen. I swear I'm no where near worthy of that title...it was the dress!! Too bad I don't think I can fit in it anymore.

That was my original plan! But I got some good girlfriend advice to go with this black one in this case. I wore that black and white one to several things earlier this year though.
Elizabeth Moss had a colorblock dress on too- so I wouldn't want to upstage her or anything. ;) In reality though, I would have lost out on any kind of comparison. She looked amazing. I kind of want her dress now too, and January Jones'.

Wow, that is soo cool! A friend of mine is an engineer for an NPR show and has met Jon Hamm and said he was really nice, but had a really quirky and dry kind of sense of humor, kind of like the non Mad Men characters he has played in movies before. He met him in 2009 though so right after Mad Men's first big season.

No he wasn't unfortunately. And no Joan/Christina Hendricks. So a small bummer but it seemed like almost everyone else was there!
