View Full Version : just curious how much a month do you pay for birth control?

Don't want to cause a debate here, but just really curious. My DH had a vasectomy so we now pay nothing now.

When I did have to use the pill I paid somewhere between $5 and $25 for it monthly depending on what insurance I had. I would have given up a lot of monthly expenses had I had to pay really high oop costs for birth control. DH used to spend $10 or $15 a month or two for condoms until we got married (I could never be too careful).

My grad school is Catholic, so we pay out of pocket. About $60/month usually, but now $75/month b/c the bf-safe pill is even more expensive. It really sucks :( We're living on DH's salary + my fellowship, so this actually does mean a not inconsiderable chunk of our monthly income. But it's less $ than getting pregnant now! I understand why they won't cover it, but it does eat into our budget.

Insurance will cover, eventually.

Right now we are using natural family planning until DH goes for his snip. When I was on the pill it was $7 for a 3 month supply of generic through my health insurance.

Gosh I am not sure what we pay in condoms but have to assume it is <10 a month. Um yeah I just looked it up. 144 condoms for 21 dollars. We are NOT using more than 70 condoms a month! HA HA HA HA

If you are paying out of pocket, have you tried Walmart or Target? In the states where it is allowed, they have some BCPs for $9 a month.

I've checked into several options, but what I'm paying is really the cheapest I can find my prescription right now. For various reasons, this is the kind of pill I need to be on (Target and Walmart only offer a couple of kinds of pills for that reduced rate). And it's just $ without insurance.

I have considered trying to see if I could fill my prescription less expensively through Planned Parenthood, but we can *technically* afford the expense right now and I don't want to take resources away from those who truly can't (and there are plenty iin mycommunity). If I don't get a full-time job or adequate funding for next year, though, I'll definitely be heading over there.

Do you get your condoms from Amazon? IF yes, what a great idea.

We are self-insured. I pay $43/month for my pill. It is worth every penny!

$45/every 24 days here. I take it continuously, so I don't take the 4 pills at the end. That's with a co-pay.

Wish I could get it cheaper, but it's worth every penny. It also helps with my migraines.

Back when I went on the BCP I think it was about $10 a month through my insurance (I forgot to check "we have insurance" on the poll). We mostly do NFP (and we'd been TTC for a while), but DH was a little freaked at the thought of another baby when he was finishing grad school and then was unemployed for 7 months, so he asked me to go on the BCP for his peace of mind (I don't do well with it) so I told him OK but only for a few months.

Currently I am using condoms but am looking for something more effective. I called to schedule an IUD with my OB, my insurance deductible is not met so i would pay 100% just the IUD itself is $860.10 not including the doctors bill to install it. BCPs are covered at 100% but I hate taking them.

I was about to say $0 because we use NFP, but then I remembered one of the methods I use requires the Clearblue monitor testing sticks. One box of 30 sticks for around $35/box lasts me 3-5 cycles.

we had health insurance that does not cover contraception and paid $800 OOP for a mirena 5 years ago. Our current insurance covers it so when I have it replaced (maybe?) next year or make another decision it will be covered

I've never been on any BC, except using condoms (and they weren't cheap, b/c I'm allergic to latex, the non-latex ones are super expensive). After DS3, DH got a vasectomy. It was 100% covered on our plan, since he had it done at the hospital he works at. I'm afraid to take BCP or any other hormonally controlled BCP, I just have a bad feeling that my body wouldn't handle it well, so have been able to avoid it.

$43/month after my insurance offsets the cost (not sure what the before-insurance rate is.) And that's for the generic version of my script.

When I was taking the pill and living in the US my monthly cost was $5 thanks to insurance. However, the actual cost of the pills was $55. And I was more than surprised to find out upon moving to Canada that those same pills cost only $15.

Well one side effect of infertility is not needing birth control. Back when I took the pill, first I got it free at a military pharmacy. And then after dh became a civilian, I paid whatever my insurance didn't cover. I honestly don't remember, but I am sure it was minimal.

I don't pay anything now because I have had my IUD for 3 years but when I had no insurance and a very low paying job I paid $60 a month for birth control. To put that into context I was paying $450 a month for rent and made less than $1000 a month gross. So more than 5% of my income at the time.

I have the Mirena, but even with (good) insurance, I paid $500 out of pocket.

I about fell out of my chair when we got the statement but if you break it down to the 60 months the IUD is good for, it works out to $8.30 a month.

It's cost me between $4 and $25 a month for the same type of birth control pill - it depends on what our insurance plan has been.

I was going to say $0, since I haven't had any type of fun in ages (seriously--a year or so now), and like some other women on here, I've got some fertility issues (PCOS). However, I do spend $10 a year for a diaphragm, and another $10 a year for a tube of (continually unused) spermicide.

Interestingly, I do have insurance--through my Catholic-ran employer and insurer.

However, when I was going to go on something to make my periods better (like the patch or the ring), and I got the shock of my life... $80 or so a month. No thanks, regular periods aren't *that* important to me, LOL.

Very little. We use condoms (huge box bought a long time ago...I extended nursed both kids, so I didn't get my period back until they were 18mo-2 yrs old.). Dh works for a catholic hospital, so it wouldn't be covered.

We have a HDHP, so it is either $73 for 3 months (mini pill for now, my regular ones are cheaper) or I pay nothing, depending on whether we have hit the deductible, but it comes out of my HSA, so the real cost is about 25 percent less.

DH works for a drug company and all of their drugs are free for employees - so as long as I stick to a BCP that they make, it's free. Otherwise it would be $10/month for BCP. When I got a Mirena (had to pull it so that I could have a test done on my uterus), it was covered with a $20 copay.

I'm pregnant, so... no birth control for a long time. My DH will get a vasectomy in the fall (he wants to wait for football season).

When considering how much I paid for the pill, I factor in that I pay for health insurance. Yes, we have it through DH's work, but we still pay. A lot.

I am currently pregnant, but voted accordingly to what we were doing before TTC (<10$ /month on condoms).

Prior to having DD in 2008, ie the last time I was using any hormonal BC, it would have been approx $15/month on OCPs (insurance copay).

Before that, I was on the pill and it cost about $20 a month with insurance.

Wow! When I was on Nuva Ring I thought $40 was expensive. Now we use condoms. I bought a huge box on sale at Drugstore.com with a coupon code so it was maybe $10

Tubal during my 2nd c-section, so $0 now. DH was also going to get a V, but that's on hold for a little while due to his upcoming surgery :(

Just a note: We had friends who had fertility issues and thought they were done after DC2 b/c they didn't have any embryos left. Well, she's pregnant again, this time without assistance... They really didn't think it was possible.
