upload movies to iphone/ipad?

is there anyway to upload dvd's, tv shows to either an iphone/ipad? do i need to purchase them all through itunes or is there an app i can use?

I used a download called handbrake to convert my dvd's into a format I could load into itunes and then sync with my ipad.

I am not the most tech savy person and was able to get it to work. It has been a while since I used it but I remember also having to download VLC to get the copy to work.

All of the downloads were free.
