I have done tha natural dyes in the past (boil with spinach for pale green, etc). I have also done the silk tie method, which I think turns out pretty and is a unique look.

Anyone want to share your favorite or what you are planning to try this year?

I just did small torn pieces of tissue paper mod lodged onto eggs one year and they are beautiful! I did it onto plastic eggs and it looks very stained-glass like.

Just the good-old write-with-white-crayon-and-dye-the-eggs thing. :) DH thought it would be cool to do some football ones this year (white for the laces, and since DD is young & likes to dip them in a bunch of colors, they usually turn out brown anyhow).
I think glitter would also be fun to use this year.

I am seriously thinking about trying to cut small vinyl circles with my Silhouette to make polka dot eggs.
I'll be watching this thread!

Grate some old crayons (using a grater that you don't plan to use again for food!) and hard boil the eggs. When they have just come out of the water, sprinkle crayon gratings on them to melt. Also you can press the end of a crayon onto the hot egg to melt it.

We got that one last year as well. Loved it because even my (then) 1 year old could participate without a mess. We are going to reuse it again this year most likely.

I want to try these rubberband eggs

How about infomama's ingenious duct tape idea? Except this time use it on eggs. :D

Any recommedations for trying to dye eggs with a 17mo? I would prefer to not use food dye unless it is something like the spin and dye linked above (although don't see where to buy?).

I found it on Amazon. It's $13, including the shipping costs. Anyone know if this is a good price?

It's $5.99 at Target. Saw them there today. I think I got mine last year at Walmart for $5.

I wanted to add that for the last several years I buy a wooden egg for the kids at Micheal's and have them paint them. Then I write their name and date on the bottom. I love bringing them out and looking at how they have grown in their art abilities. I got the idea from her a few years ago.

I found this page's eggs to be inspirationa (http://www.miycreations.com/easy-easter-egg-craft.html)l.

And I HIGHLY recommend this egg blowing tool (http://www.amazon.com/Blower-Blas-Fix-Decorating-Pysanky-Supplies/dp/B0014DKEJE). I always like to blow a few eggs that we do to save. I've got about 3 years' worth so far.

ETA: katydid--love the wooden egg idea. really neat.

Whatever the dye choice, we use a whisk to keep the mess down. Someone mentioned it here last year and we tried it, it was pure genius. Take the boiled egg, slide it between the sections of whisk until it's nestled securely inside, then kiddos can hold the handle and easily pick it up and put it in the container of dye. DD loved it last year and we'll be doing this again.

A little late to the post :) but I am determined not to use a regular egg coloring kit this year.
I like the ideas for the crayons and the tissue paper...and the silk ties, but I wonder how safe those are to put on eggs you are going to eat?
I saw a cool idea on Pinterest about using kool aid for the dye. So I may just try that.
