Our steralite hamper on wheels just broke. It broke in half and the handle came off. I've been using it to take all the laundry from the bedrooms down one flight of stairs to the laundry room (on the main level). I prefer the wheels b/c I don't like to drag the hamper across the floor and it's just to much to carry (I have shoulder dislocation issues). I may just go get another one, but I'm looking for other ideas. Each of the kids has a hamper in their own rooms. Daily they empty theirs into the hamper in my room (which is the one that gets transported downstairs). What type of hamper do you have that you tranport your dirty and clean laundry in?

I line my hamper with a mesh laundry bag from container store. I have them color coded by hamper location. When it's time for laundry, I pull the bag out and take it downstairs to the laundry room. I leave the hamper in the closet.

One hamper is a pastic top kind that lifts. Nothing I'd buy again.
One hamper is a sterilite wastebasket that fits below a shelf (no room for a lid)
Another is a white plastic woven wicker style (not using now).
The kids have a rolling metal wire basket that fits under a shelf (no room for a lid).
And in the laundry room I have a two compartment sorter, wood frame, with fabric liners from hold everything. (doesn't work with laundry bags from container store).
Out of all of these, I prefer the wastebasket.
If I had to buy new, I saw a Seville sorter at Costco, but has a big footprint.

I have one of these in each room, and carry them to the laundry room separately. One of those is one load, so I don't combine laundry or re-sort or anything.

The master bedroom has a very nice wicker one w/ lid from PB (wedding gift). The girls rooms have the basic tall plastic Walmart kind. We use laundry baskets to transport one load at a time downstairs to the laundry room. In our laundry room we have 2 square mesh "pop up" style to collect dirty clothes from outside, kitchen towels, clothes the kids take off as the day goes on, etc. They are very light and have handles. Wonder if something like that would work for you? http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-Basic-Pop-Up-Hamper/17163764

We have two of these (http:///www.target.com/p/Target-Home-Nest-Hamper-with-Removable-Liner-Buff-Beige/-/A-10995359#?lnk=sc_qi_detailbutton) - one for lights and one for darks in our master bedroom.

The kids each have a PBK medium canvas tote.

I like both because they are really light and easy to bring up and down the stairs.

I should clarify that we have a 3 bin organizer in the laundry room. One bin for towels, underwear socks etc... One bin for dark darks and one bin for all other outer clothes that are not dark dark (and I don't need to use woolite extra dark on). So, I take a hamper down daily and fill the bins. We do towels and undies etc... daily. Outerclothes get done about every 2nd or 3rd day.

DD has a mesh hamper in her room. We never had a fancy hamper in our bedroom b/c I've always used ours to transport the clothes downstairs. Not sure what I want now, but I don't want to spend more than $20 max.

We have three matching laundry baskets in a row in the upstairs hallway. One is for whites, on is for colors and one for darks. Everyone changes clothes in their rooms and puts the clothes in the appropriate basket. On laundry day, one basket gets carried down at a time. :)

(it'd be kind of nice to have something a bit more hiddenbut this keeps me from having to sort and most guests don't go upstairs anyway. )

We have a cart similar to this one w/out a hanging bar (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EDOQU8/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000MAIPPU&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=13RAD7M5VDGC51DZTX6E) that I got at Costco about 5 yrs. ago. I like it okay, but it is kind of big and takes up a lot of room. Now that the girls have their own dedicated hampers in their room we could almost downsize to a regular pop up hamper for myself and DH, and then one for just the towels/rags. I initially bought it thinking that we could separate things, but DH still hasn't caught on so I end up separating the laundry and putting it back in. Kind of annoying, but it keeps it off the floor when we are doing wash.

DD1 picked this one out (http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=17828860) on her own and it holds a lot.

DD2 has this pop up hamper (http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=13566720), and it is really big, but it works out just fine for her.
