I don't remember it being that bad with DC1. This time it was awful and I failed. I get to do the 3 hour tomorrow and I'm really nervous because the drink made me throw up and I freak out when they take my blood. :(. Wish me luck! Any advice or BTDT?

I'm sorry :(
My advice would be eat a very high protein meal beforehand, no carbs at all and of course no sugar.
I always eat eggs, bacon, and a glass of milk beforehand.
Also, walk around alot so that your body can metabolize the sugar. When you just sit in the waiting room the way they expect you too, your body can't handle all that sugar and it makes you sick. Moving around helps your body burn it off.
Crossing my fingers for you that you pass the next time!

I had (and passed) it with DD1. It was not that bad. I do hate the glucola and I had to sip in very slowly to keep from vomiting it back up, but that was the worst part. The nurse encouraged me to take my time so I guess it must be a common problem. :rotflmao:The blood draws were painless and I just looked in the other direction. I brought a book to read while I waited.

When I took it, I had to fast completely beforehand so I would ask your Doctor if a meal is ok.

Thanks guys! I have/had to fast since midnight last night. No food today :(. They make you sit in a room in a chair while you wait. I know it will be okay, just nervous. They set the clock for 5 min while I drink, that's why I vomit I'm sure. :(. I'm so scared that I will fail.

With each DC, I failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour with flying colors.

Hang in there & good luck!

With my 4th baby I found a research study allowing the use of jelly beans instead of glucola. I brought it in to my OB, and he allowed me to do it that way. I think it was 28 jelly belly (specifically) jelly beans. Abstract is here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10561636 I bought the full article to show him because glucola does nasty things to my insides.

Oh and it's very common to fail the one hour and pass the three hour. Think positive.

I too have failed the one hour with both my boys and went on to pass the 3hr. I'm sending positive thoughts your way (to pass the test and walk out of there without vomiting!)

p.s I too have heard of the jelly bean test as well! I'm not sure if it's too late to talk to your doc, but it might be an option for you!

I had gestational diabetes with this last pregnancy, and I just want to let you know that even if you fail the 3 hour test, you'll be ok. I was so upset about it. Beth24 had to talk me off the roof, I was so hysterically upset. But, in the end, I followed the diet and had an extremely healthy pregnancy. I'm now 7 weeks pp and 10 lbs below pre-pregnancy weight. The diet was a PITA in the beginning, but it got easier. I was able to control my sugar (though I needed to take glyburide for my fasting numbers) and DS was a healthy 5lbs, 11 oz!

As for the 3 hour test, I wish you the best of luck! I wouldn't try to eat differently ahead of time in the hopes of "tricking" the test. The fact is, if you have GD, you need to know it so that you can take the steps necessary to take care of yourself and your baby. Sure, eating fewer carbs in advance and not moving around between when you drink the drink and when they take your blood will help clear the glucose from your blood. But, if you didn't do that and there really is a GD problem you need to know about it.

Update: threw the stuff up so they poured the rest down the sink and had me make an appointment to start diabetes treatment. Seems off, but whatever.

Did you fail the 1 hour badly? Otherwise I'm surprised they'd just send you for diabetic treatment without a 3 hour score. Sorry you vomited. Maybe they'll let you do the jellybean thing that swissair mentioned.

but even if you follow the diabetic diet, at least you'll know that you're just doing a healthy diet. It would suck if you had to do the finger pricks though if you aren't actually GD.

They said finger pricks 4x a day and I'm needle phobic. They said I only failed by a little.

If you only failed the 1 hour by a little, I'd go back to them and try for the 3 hour again. So many people fail the 1 hour but pass the 3 hour. I wish I had been one of them.

If for some reason you need to do the diabetic diet/finger pricks, just know that they're really not that bad. it barely hurts. The needle is in the lancing device, so you only actually see it when you are swapping needles.

I agree with mommylamb. That seems very wrong. That isn't ACOG protocol at all.

Is throwing up the Glucola a sign of Diabetes? I can't believe they would diagnose you and give up so easily without a positive test

I also encourage you to request a re-test by different method, like the jellybeans. I failed the 3 hour test and while I controlled my sugar levels via exercise and diet, it was a bit tedious spending that much time managing it (counting carbs, finger pricks, making time to walk after every meal, checking in with the nutritionist and other specialists, etc.). Ultimately, DD2 was only 7 pounds 2 oz, so it all worked out to get a healthy baby but it would be nice to have a more leisurely pregnancy if you don't have to do the GD regimen.

I failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour with my DD2. It is possible so have positive thoughts and make sure you fast.

I would ask about checking your HA1C- it will give them a look at how your blood sugar has been running over the past few months. Otherwise, I would pressure them to give you another option to retake- some people have done jellybeans, some people have had ice cream, etc. It is not protocol to assume you have gestational diabetes just because you fail the 1 hour and can't stomach the glucola to take the 3 hour test. It seems very over the top to me (and I'm a L&D nurse) to have to subject yourself to all the fingersticks and education for possibly nothing.

I also failed the 1 hour test (only slightly) recently, but the doctor did not even give me a chance to take the 3 hour test. He made me an appointment for me to see a dietician and a diabetes Nurse right away. I was required to prick my finger 4 times/day and record my blood sugar, as well as keep a log of everything I ate/drank. After 2 weeks of normal range blood sugar, I met with the Dietician again this week and advised her that I would no longer be monitoring my blood sugar/diet. I see my doctor this week, so I am anxious as to what he will say.....
