I am looking for a book recommendation for someone aged 17 who is entering college about how to make friends. This person has had a hard time making friends in the past. Thanks!

Don't know of anything aimed at teens, per se, but this book is certainly a classic on the topic. http://www.amazon.com/How-Win-Friends-Influence-People/dp/0671027034 I haven't read it myself, but know several people who have, and I've only really ever heard good things about it.

I don't have a specific book resource. But as a mom just starting to look at colleges for my oldest, it was nice to find out that there are programs at colleges that help kids form bonds and adjust. In a couple of the campuses we just visited they even have freshman dorms based on interests where you live with people who have a common interest to you (let's say theater) and they plan events/field trips for the students based on that theme. Also, these colleges have so many clubs and organizations that there has got to be at least one that appeals to everyone where friendships could be made. Also, buddy/mentor relationships. I would encourage the student and/or parents to start to look into these types of things at the campus. In addition, accepted students are now starting to meet one another on Facebook and relationships are starting online before school even starts. Furthermore, roommate selection has gone the way of Match.com where kids are getting paired up with better compatability.

If it's a case of almost an asperger-type scenario, I would encourage the parents to contact the campus' support services and see if there are additional resources. And perhaps the teen can work with a counselor the summer before college who can help with social skills.
