Going to First Communion of my niece. I love the Tiffany Madonna necklace.

(I would get it in silver). But I can't see my niece wearing that, ever, or even any other religious wear. She's a total tomboy, wears althletic pants daily, and is not into jewelry from what I can tell. So what would be some good gifts?

I was a total tomboy at 8, too, but ... I wore the two crosses I received as First Communion gifts daily once I hit high school. (I rotated them depending on my mood.)

I still had them until college, when I lost one of the charms while walking back to my dorm. I was heartbroken; it had been given to me by my aunt Fran. (When her eldest DD made her First Communion, I searched all over to find a pendant for my cousin that reminded me of the one I'd lost. I even had it blessed and everything.)

ETA: It was similar to this, only in matte gold not shiny, and a little more detailed in the ring 'round the arms of the cross:

So, yes, even a tomboy could grow to appreciate a gift of a necklace.

She would wear it to church. Catholics tend to dress for church.
If I had that beautiful piece, I'd wear it every Sunday until I was an old woman, then pass it on to my own daughter.

But perhaps an engraved keepsake box would be more practical. Every girl loves those.

I love it too! I gave it to my friend (in her twenties) when I was her RCIA sponsor.

I got a gold cross for my first communion from my grandparents and I always thought it was quite adult looking so I didn't wear it much until I was an adult. I wear it a lot now.

I like the Tiffany Madonna necklace, but it looks more like a mom necklace. If you still really want a Tiffany silver necklace I would do something like these:

heart cross necklace (http://www.tiffany.com/Shopping/Item.aspx?fromGrid=1&sku=28830009&mcat=148204&cid=563629&search_params=s+5-p+2-c+563629-r+-x+-n+6-ri+-ni+0-t+)
traditional cross (http://www.tiffany.com/Shopping/Item.aspx?fromGrid=1&sku=21344273&mcat=&cid=&search_params=s+1-p+6-c+-r+-x+-n+6-ri+-ni+0-t+cross&search=1)
traditional bubble looking cross (http://www.tiffany.com/Shopping/Item.aspx?sku=28550995&mcat=&cid=&fromGrid=1&search_params=s+1-p+6-c+-r+-x+-n+6-ri+-ni+0-t+cross&search=1)

I think the third one looks the most kid friendly, but I would also consider a simple initial necklace like this one (http://www.tiffany.com/Shopping/Item.aspx?fromGrid=1&sku=GRP02278&mcat=&cid=&search_params=s+1-p+2-c+-r+-x+-n+6-ri+-ni+0-t+initial+&search=1)

I also like the idea of a box. I give this small one (http://www.potterybarn.com/m/products/engravable-silver-plated-jewelry-boxes/?pkey=cjewelry-boxes-accessories) for high school graduations, but would work for a number of other events religious or not.

I think a cross necklace is a great gift, and something she could definitely grow into. So perhaps she would wear it occasionally now, but perhaps more as she gets older and has more occasions for dressing up. FWIW, I was given the Tiffany's bubble cross (that Annie linked to) when I was in my early twenties, and I still wear it almost every day, with jeans and t-shirts, as well as skirts and blouses. I'm not a big jewelry person (usually just the necklace and pearl studs), and I love that the bubble cross is understated and classic- it definitely won't be going out of style any time soon, and it goes with pretty much anything.
