I picked up this Splendid dress from TJ Maxx today.

The fabric content is 45% Supima cotton, 45% modal, 9% cotton, 1% rayon and the tag says dry clean only. Do you think I can get away with machine washing on delicate? Or hand washing? It was only $15, so a great deal, but if I need to dry clean it, I may have to rethink the purchase.

What about using those Dryel or Woolite dry cleaning sheets? I do that with most of my dry-clean-only stuff, especially from TJMaxx.

I don't have any experience with Splendid clothes but I think you would be ok to wash on delicate and hang dry. It is basically cotton and rayon (modal is a rayon). This Splendid top is 50% supima cotton and 50% modal and says to wash in cold.

I worked in a dry cleaner's for 3 years while in high school. Yep, you can wash it though I would only hand wash it in cold water with gentle detergent. I wouldn't wring it out. I'd roll it up in a towel to get the excess water out. Then I'd lay flat to dry. I wouldn't hang it or put it in the dryer. It should be fine.

Sometimes clothing manufacturers dont' know how their fabric or the threads used to sew the fabric will stand up to washing. Slapping on "dry clean only" is a way to get around that. At least, that is what I'd learned while working at the cleaners eons ago.

:yeahthat:
Exactly what I would do. I've washed a lot of my delicate items by hand with either Woolite or Delicate Wash from The Laundress, air dry, and they do fine.
