Since I'm really going to try to do lying in for the first week or two, I wanted to get a few comfy but pretty but practical pajamas so I'm not just in one of SO's old t-shirts, especially as we will probably have visitors while I'm still PJed up.

My criteria:
*Comfortable - soft cottons, breathable fabrics, etc.
*Compatible with nursing - so either stretchy neckline or central button placket. Doesn't have to be nursing specific - I usually find those to be more complicated than I like anyway.
*Pretty enough and with coverage enough for visitors
*Ideally with short or long sleeves instead of sleeveless and cropped or knee length

I'm looking at these:

I wanted to wear cute pajamas and was then struck by the reality of postpartum bleeding and a sudden desire to only wear dark colors on the bottom to minimize stain removal.

Personally I'd stick with dark yoga pants w/ a cute nursing shirt or nursing cami+cute zip sweater/hoodie.

:yeahthat: Exactly what I was thinking! I lived in ON yoga pants.

I know, but I feel schlubby in yoga pants (I'm matchy matchy for stuff like this) and want something I can hopefully wear in the future. I will take into account the stain possibility! Maybe the pretty white Hanros are not the best idea.

If you do go with them I'd just stock up on Oxi-Clean and Fels-Naptha beforehand ;)

If you want nursing friendly, I'd stick with knit pajamas (i.e. with bottoms) rather than nightgowns - maybe check Garnet Hill? I had a couple of pairs of LE pajamas
I wore for a week or two post-partum with DD#2 (and after :)). I'm with PPs, though, I wanted to be dressed for visitors, and loved my dark-colored yoga pants (comfy, and with nice belly "coverage") and nursing tanks.

Would you feel less schlubby in a fold-over waist knit skirt?

The last comment reminded me that I wore the Old Navy foldover jersey skirts a lot immediately postpartum. I liked the comfy waist and the fact I wasn't wearing true maternity wear. I also felt like the skirt concealed the maxi-pad butt feeling.

My favorite was a target nursing tank top, in combo with cute pj pants (like stuff you can find at TJ Maxx) or yoga pants. The nursing tank top, IMO is the key to the outfit, and it's easy to layer over it too (ie: if you have a winter baby, wear the tank under a shirt or sweater).

SNTM,

I just got these in and they are super soft and comfy:

I will probably order more now that I know I have the correct size. I am going to take these (in black) to the hospital.
I originally went to this site to get some breast pump parts. Customer service was really good and they have a fit specialist.

Edited to say I just noticed you prefer sleeves...there are a couple gown styles at the bottom with sleeves.

Honestly, my favorite buy was the super cheap PJ's I picked up from Walmart. I figured they'd get bled on, so I wanted the cheapest thing possible. Turns out they never did get bled on, and I still wear them 12 weeks post-partum because they're so comfortable and easy for the middle of the night nursing sessions. I don't have a link, b/c I just found them at the store, but they were cropped bottoms w/ elastic waist, and a short-sleeve button-down top. The prints weren't super stylish, but they weren't ugly either....I didn't really have any visitors other than family in the first week, but I wouldn't have minded people seeing me in them at all. So -- if you want to look for something really cheap, that's something to check. I was surprised how well they worked and how much I liked them.

for summer, I loved the majamas sleepy dress with the tie shawl thing around it. Made for nursing, cut really well, uber comfy, then I could cover up my chest/shoulders easily. LOVE - had 3 http://tummystyle.com/products/Majamas-Sleepy-Nursing-Dress~739.html

I got these today at Target. Super soft...

http://www.target.com/p/Gilligan-OMalley-Womens-Sleep-Top-Black-Purple-White/-/A-13898059

Wanted these, but they didn't have my size:

http://www.target.com/p/Gilligan-OMalley-Womens-Deco-Print-Paisley-Crop-Pajama-Pant-Black-White/-/A-14000935

I didn't have very bad PP bleeding with DS, and I did like having pjs I could be around my family in for the first week and still feel comfortable. I like these Gillian OMalley ones b/c they have a dark pattern if I do happen to get some stains, and aren't so expensive I'll be upset if they are ruined. I also got some GO nursing tanks and ON yoga pants.

Thanks for more suggestions!

Part of the decision for pajamas/nightgowns is psychological. Both for me (I'm type A and if I'm wearing real clothes, I won't stay in bed like I'm supposed to) and for visitors (I want something that implies "I'm glad you are here, but you get 15 minutes because I'm going back to sleep soon.")

I ordered the two Eilleen West nightgowns from Nordstrom's since I get free shipping (they have buttons down the front so it should be nursing compatible), and may check out Target again. Our B&M one didn't have anything that I liked last time, though in general I like them.

This is my plan this time around, as well, we had people (I'm looking at you MIL and FIL :30: ) who overstayed their welcome and would stay VERY late (and they wouldn't even offer any help). When DS was born I did the yoga pants and nursing tank thing and it obviously didn't work in conveying a "mom in recovery" message. So I'm hoping the PJ's send a clearer message.

The Japanese Weekend ones are awesome. I also have the sleveless set and the short sleeved gown.
