Fedoragirl's thread reminded me that I've meant to ask this for a while: dh and I are looking for some children's books with truly lovely art, on religious themes.

Sprog is accustomed to checking out stained glass and icons when she gets bored during mass. I'm not necessarily looking for books with that exact kind of art, but that would be lovely. She's pretty into mass and picking out the symbolic things around the building. I can tell she's cuing into the fact that certain pictures and symbols show up in consistent contexts, if that makes sense?

Bible stories, liturgy-related, saints, whatever. They certainly don't have to be from our particular Christian sub-culture! (Our immediate family is quite diverse on that front, so she already sees a nice variety.)

Not cartoons. :)

I said "religious" instead of "Christian" because I'd love to see similar books in other faith traditions, too. It would be great to have them around the house and in Sprog's little mental view of the world!

Eta- The Demi books look like they may fit what you are looking for illustration-wise.

The first one that came to my mind is Silent Night illustrated by Susan Jeffers

I also really love Ezra Jack Keats' Little Drummer Boy. I'm not sure if that is exactly what you are looking for, but I think it is lovely.

I'll have to think of some more that have struck me as being beautifully illustrated.

I've always really, really loved Tomie de Paola books. My favorite is The Clown of God but he has made many of the years.

I love the artwork in the Brian Wildsmith books. A child who likes traditional religious art would love it, I think.
