When is it safe to put a regular child-sized blanket in the crib? How about a small blanket (like a lovey)? DC is 17mo.

I think it's totally safe at that age. I think DS1 started using a blanket in the crib around 13-14 months.

We did it earlier than that for dd. (Ds got tangled up and woke up crying if we gave him a blanket at that age.)

I think we gave DD1 a blanket around her first birthday. She got a pillow at around 15-16 months because she would wad the blanket up to put under her head, she's a tummy sleeper.

We put a crib-sized down comforter (IKEA) in DS's bed around 1.5 years old. I think you're fine to put one in at this point.

DS has been using a crib sized blanket since around 12mos.

In some other countries, it's still perfectly normal to use blankets in the crib from birth. I know that SIL used one with her baby in Sweden, and I don't think that their SIDS rates are higher. Her daughter is now ten months and uses a pillow and blanket. My DS won't stay under a blanket though.

Yes, you can use one now. We have since age 1.

Some pedis say 1 and some say 2. We gave DD1 a blanket at 1 and she started a pillow this week at 2

Our ped said 1 yo, but DS was born in the summer so he didn't use one until 18 mo.

With DD1 I think we started at about 8 months with a thermal blanket. With DD2 my BBB conscious got to me and we didn't do anything heavier than an Aden & Anais Swaddle until about a year old, plus we had more sleep sacks, but she out grew them at about a year as well.

We started using one recently for DS2 (almost 1 year old), and I think just around 13-14 months for DS1. We put a pillow in around 18 mos for DS2, and just started filling the crib after that (desperation for him to sleep). Now he can't sleep without his little cocoon, even in the big boy bed :)

DD received a crib sized down comforter for her 1st birthday (December) and has been using it ever since then. She was using a lighter blanket since around 10 months. After this cold spell I am going to switch out the comforter back to a lighter crib sized blanket. She has had a pillow since around 11 months. I think you are fine at 17 months. Start out with something lighter/breathable at first if you are still worried.

For those that use a blanket, do you just put it in the crib loose - or do you make the bed with the blanket (tucking it around the mattress and putting DC under the blanket)?

For those who put in pillows, any pillows you recommend? Thanks!

Dd still wears a sleep sack. The blanket is just a lovey so it is loose. She doesn't have a pillow yet, but when we got one for ds for use at preschool, I picked up a travel size down pillow at REI for him. I still have that tucked away and will give it to dd for her first pillow.

DS1 just had it lose. I would just cover him with it when he went to bed at night, but it wasn't tucked in.

I cover DS with it but leave it lose. He uses this pillow.

My son born in Ethiopia has been using a blanket and pillow since at least 6 months. When he came home to us at 10 months we used a toddler pillow and receiving blankets or toddler size blankets.
