View Full Version : Need good chick lit/beach reads

I need some light reading for a few weeks with 2 flights across the country for work, and then our trip to the beach when I allow myself to get lost in a book for bedtime reading. Can't do heavy drama-- my life is too heavy right now with enough drama to last us awhile. Looking for just getting lost in a fun book - the way that Bridge Jones got me when it first came out, or Sex and The City did on TV. I am looking for sitcom-ish. Believable (so no vampires or hunger games, which I did enjoy, but I have to believe it), but fun. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

You're speaking my language...

Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay
Familyhood by Paul Reiser
Mr Maybe by Jane Green
Mini Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella
Shopaholic & Baby
Secret History by Donna Tartt (not so light but a great read nonetheless)
Heart of the Matter by Emily Griffin
Last Chance Saloon by Keyes

I second the Shopaholic series. Ridiculously funny and predictable, but in a good, light reading way. Total beach read, with many "OMG I have done that!" or "I can't believe she did that!" moments. I laughed, I cried, I rolled my eyes, and was able to read in short, often 2-3 page spurts and not lose continuity.

Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay

Just the title of this one makes me have to go check it out...

Are toddler straw cups Chardonnay approved? :innocent:

I usually like anything by Sophie Kinsella, esp. the Shopaholic series. I just read Can You Keep A Secret?, and it was pretty funny. I'm about to read I've Got Your Number.

Katie Fforde has some good ones. My favorite is Stately Pursuits: http://www.amazon.com/Stately-Pursuits-Katie-Fforde/dp/0312206763/ref=la_B000AQ71UQ_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1339172124&sr=1-6

Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married is another good one: http://www.amazon.com/Lucy-Sullivan-Is-Getting-Married/dp/B002ECEF2G/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1339172188&sr=1-1

I loved Anna Maxted's Getting Over It--this book is fun but also more serious: http://www.amazon.com/Getting-Over-It-Anna-Maxted/dp/B003H4RCXO/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1339172300&sr=1-5

:yeahthat:

They were the first "chick lit" I picked up without prompting.

I also recommend The Undomestic Goddess, which is also by Sophie Kinsella.

I read 'Sippy Cups are not for Chardonnay' when I was PG with DD. I love this book!! Too funny!!

The Sophie Kinsella books are also cute quick reads.

What about any of the Janet Evonovich books? There is also a series, 'Little Lady Agency' I think it is the title. I haven't read them, but heard they are cute.

Not super duper light, but a quick and enjoyable read for me was "On the Island". I think it started as a self-pub Kindle book, and I had pretty low expectations, but it was so much better than a lot of the "real" books I've read lately. I just thoroughly enjoyed it, it was very readable. Not nearly as cheesy as the description sounds...the description makes it seem like it's a Harlequin romance which isn't the tone at all.

yes to jennifer crusie, yes to janet evanovich, maryjanice davidson the next time you're in the mood for some vampires or werewolves - spicy & very funny. i didn't like the shopaholics after the first one - i kept wanting to yell at her & shake her. ooh, how about 'in her shoes'? a bit deeper, but a great great story.

I don't think anyone's ever taken my advice on
None of your Business (http://www.valerieblock.com/content/books_none_of_your_business.asp) by Valerie Block, but there were some laugh-out-loud moments for me...

I like her, too. I haven't read this one (might have to download it tonight), but I have read several others by her and liked them all. Holds my attention, not too cheesy, but an easy read.

Yep! She has quite a few adult books (vs her YA stuff...which I am also a sucker for).
