View Full Version : "Would of"

It's the grammar rule that annoys me the most when broken. It's "would've" or "would have"!

(BTW, I haven't seen it here, so it's not aimed at "you", but at a certain FB friend, who I wouldn't feel comfortable correcting).

I see it at least once a day online! It's horrible.

:yeahthat:

I get irritated reading "would of" and I really, really hate "alot" -- so annoying!

Drives me bonkers too! As well as the closely related "could of"...

Oh lord, yes. College freshman essays are another place where the horrid "could of, would of, should of, might of, etc" show up all the time! At least there it's my job to correct them.

Ooh, if I could take a big red pen to the misused "of" it would be sooo cathartic. But of course I'd have to read their entire essays.

I totally agree that it's annoying. Another common one is when people say they could care less, when they mean they couldn't care less.

Honestly, though, that is not my biggest gripe. Things that reeeeally drive me crazy?

"loose" for "lose"
"dinning" for "dining"
"it's" for "its" (and vice versa)

I tend not to care about stuff people say, more stuff people write. I feel like speech is more free, but writing is a codified system.

:yeahthat: and the worst one IMHO is "massage" instead of "message".

Very unique. Really unique. Any modifier with unique. Gaaaaaahhhhh! It means the only example of something! It means one of a kind! How can something be very one of a kind?!?!?!?!?!?

Whew. I feel better now.

I love these threads!

Toward not towards
Albeit not all be it

I work with a guy who refuses to capitalize personal pronouns and other small words in titles cuz they're "little words" and look wrong when capitalized. Really? REALLY?!

I would have gave....

I would have did that..

HATE IT, and I hear it more than I'd like to admit. Could be worse, could be would "of" instead of "have" but this is verbally stated so who knows how it would have been written out!
