Title says it all. She has been coughing for about 3 days now--all day long. It's not a flemmy cough at all. It's more dry. She doesn't have allergies. She probably has a cold, although no runny nose (most likely post nasal drip). No fever, on and off sore throat. She sounds horrible when she coughs. At night we can do benadryl allergy (per the ENT and ped). During the day she does take claritin to keep her airway clearer or mucus (although it doesn't help when she gets a cold).

Is there anything I can give her for a cough at age 5?

She was exposed to HFM, but If it's HFM, she has yet to break out with rash/welts anywhere.

We do humidifyer every night all year. Do I just let you eat honey off a spoon or do warm water and honey for her to drink?

I third the Honey suggestion, even the Mayo clinic has an article about how it's just as good as any cough suppressant if not better. And I have to agree, it's what works best for DS.

Also the humidifier at night.

ETA: Just saw your last post, you can give her honey straight from a spoon.

We usually do a mixture of honey and lemon juice. The internet had a few more recipes worth trying too. Its interesting to read why each added the ingredients they did. All three of these links have normal pantry items. I am especially intrigued by the middle one that uses onion. One of my sons German kindergarten teachers told us to use a warm onion to cure an ear infection and believe it or not it worked really, really well.

Onion has antiseptic properties.

I'm going to have to try the other recipes. DD tried the honey and remarked that she hated it.

We flavor our honey with Torani (sp?) raspberry syrup - not exactly healthy, but it works.

I've given (not at the same time, of course!):
Simlisan. Works great. http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/similasan-kids-cough-relief-syrup/ID=prod6008511-product?V=G&ext=frgl_Google_Medicines_&_Treatments

Dr. Zarbee's night time cough drink. It comes in a powder and we mix it with water. http://www.zarbees.com/ecommerce/category.i?cmd=allcats

We make "cough tea" in our house. It's just honey dissolved in a little warm water. Honey off the spoon makes my DS gag. He hates it! He'll suck down a whole mug full of "cough tea" though.

A spoon of Honey and Vicks vaporub on the chest. DD gets coughs often due to allergies and just illness in general and the Vicks works every time.

You can give her Delsym cough syrup. My boys tolerate the grape flavor, they have orange too.

Honey in a little hot water with some fresh squeezed lemon is soothing if she doesn't like it straight from the spoon.

I thought one wasn't supposed to cough suppresants till after age 6. Am I missing some info.?
We do honey straight from the spoon.

I think Delsym is an expectorant not a suppressant. Extended release dextromethorphan. It is labeled for ages 4 and up. OP we use that too but for day time.

Thanks everyone. I just got DD a doc appt for today. We are going away tomorrow and in addition to her cough she has a sore throat, stomach ache, headache and now a fever (and I have the same thing and I'm having issues breathing). So off to the ped we go (then off to the doc I go b/c we will end up at the ER at MIL's if I wait)
