What's a good push tricycle/ride on toy for my 2.5 yr old? I am thinking a tricycle that I can push her around the block on, that she can learn how to pedal on as well. I really don't want to spend $$ on this thing, because I plan for her to go to a balance bike when she's a little older (it's too big for her right now - perhaps when she's 4).

DD has the Schwinn Easy Steer Trike.

I like it because it has a seatbelt and foot pegs. DD likes to put things in the little backpack that attaches to the back of the seat.

See if you can get a basic Kettler trike (Junior, Blossom or Green trike) on CL. They're good for that age. We have a Jumbo I bought off CL for $50 and we will probably be able to resell for that amount when we're done with it.

I was going to say this too. And you can sell it when you are done with it. We love the Kettler DD has.

I had a Kettler but neither kid took to it.
The both far preferred this: http://www.step2.com/p/Push-Around-Buggy (http://www.step2.com/p/Push-Around-Buggy)
I don't think they need to petal - they won't really learn to ride at that age, IMO, so let them ride something goofy and fun.

DS liked the Step 2 buggy, but at a younger age. At 2.5 he was getting too big for it. We have a Kettler Go Green trike with the push handle, we loved it. DS is 4.5, and has a Strider bike but sometimes he still likes to ride the trike.

IDK which balance bikes you've looked at but the Strider has a pretty low setting for younger kids, like 2.5-3 yo is a good age to start IMO. DS's got his for his 3rd Bday. He learned balance on the Strider, pedaling on the Kettler and when he got his pedal bike (without training wheels) earlier this year he put 2 and 2 together right away and took off.

I'm looking at something like this as well, since we already have a traditional tricycle - I just break my back pushing her around on it, and she has no idea how to pedal it, no matter how many times I show her.

We have [URL="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001HX3CEA/ref=ox_ya_os_product"]a 16" Go Glider balance bike (http://www.step2.com/p/Push-Around-Buggy). It's for 5-10 year olds because i got it for DD1 last year when she was 5. She still shows no interest in it. :( So I will keep it around for DD2, so she will have it to grow into. It's WAY too big for her right now, and I don't want to pay the money for another one. They aren't common on my CL.

Here's what we have with wheels in my house:
- plasma-type car (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0061MIG8E/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00)for each girl - these get ridden a lot
- mini kick scooter for DD2 (http://www.amazon.com/Micro-Mobility-MM0004-MiniK-Mini-Kick-Scooter/dp/B000Y8DJ9W/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1340245669&sr=1-1&keywords=mini+kick+scooter+aqua)- she's just now starting to show interest in this, but wouldn't be able to ride it around the block or anything. She scoots around the house barely
- Razor A3 (http://www.amazon.com/Razor-A3-Kick-Scooter-Red/dp/B000FKALU4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1340245635&sr=8-1&keywords=razor+a3)- just got this for DD1 so she could pass down her mini kick scooter
- Couzy Coupe (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3455874)- gets no love
- regular tricycle for DD2 (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3715535)- this was passed down from DD1 and it's okay. It's rather heavy, and getting rusty.
- 12" regular bike with training wheels (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Kawasaki-12-Kids-Bicycle-with-Training-Wheels/11064959)- I want to get rid of this. It's really heavy, was super cheap, and I want them to learn how to ride the balance bike
- Go Glider Balance bike 16" (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001HX3CEA/ref=ox_ya_os_product) - I'm really hoping I can get DD1 interested in this bike this summer so I can get her a real big girl bike.

I want to donate/sell the Cozy Coupe, the regular tricycle, and the 12" regular bike with training wheels.

I think it depends on the kid. DD2 just turned 2.5 and she's been riding her trike for some time now. She can ride it around the neighborhood and to the playground. It was weird.... one day she couldnt figure out the pedals at all and the next, she could but she couldnt steer. And again, one day, she just put it all together.

I agree, it depends on the kid. DD1 was pedaling a trike at 20 months at her daycare, DD2 is 25 months and not close.
We have a Strider for her which I hope she'll get into soon - a neighbor's 23 month old son is zipping around on his already! They are all so different.

Well just took the girls for a bike ride - me on my bike with DD2 in her copilot seat, and I tried to get DD1 to ride the Go Glider. We got about 3 houses down and she kept complaining and complaining that she wanted to ride the regular bike with the training wheels. That bike is a 12" bike - a LOT small for a 6 year old!!! I tried reasoning with her to no avail.

So I guess I'm going to sell the balance bike since DD2 won't be able to even fit on it for at least 2-3 more years (especially if she's petite like DD1). I'm going to get a bigger bike with training wheels I guess. At least I can get her out and riding that way.

I'm bummed she refuses to ride the balance bike. :(
