DS1 has been struggling with sleep issues for the past year. In one of the sleep threads someone recommended using audio books to help their kids fall asleep. I got to thinking about this and I think this could be great for DS since he's always up talking and making up stories. I have to read before bed to force my brain to shut down...maybe if DS isn't making up the stories himself, his brain can quiet down and he'll fall asleep.

So I'd love recommendations of your favorite 3 yo appropriate chapter books. Bonus if you know they come in audio version!

Thanks!

Maybe some of the Magic Tree House books? DD1 got some on CD in Wendy's kids' meals when she was 3 (but maybe closer to 4) and listened to those pretty much non-stop. Do they have to be chapter books? We also downloaded some from Storynory (http://storynory.com/) around that age as well.

We like some of the Greathall books on CD-they have some geared toward young children like Uncle Wiggly or Just So Stories. We own a lot of Jim Weiss, as we tie in some of his products for older kids into our HSing curriculum. They also have a "Good Night" CD (we own and like that one) and a "Sweet Dreams" CD. THeir products are also now available on MP3 on amazon and I think on the greathall site, which saves a few dollars over the cost of the CD in most cases.

My Father's Dragon is a good early chapter book.

Audiobook here:

eta: depending on how he is with listening and how ready he is, maybe try Stuart Little, Mouse and the Motorcycle, Little House on the Prairie, Winnie the Pooh by AA Mllne. I think most of those have audio CDs available. I also agree with Magic Treehouse on CD. Boring to read aloud (I only do it if the kids beg, because I like them as early independent reading), but DD and DS1 have a few on CD they like to listen to.

We also have this CD for DD: http://www.amazon.com/Indigo-Ocean-Dreams-Self-Esteem-Self-Awareness/dp/0970863365/ref=sr_1_cc_2?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1340387140&sr=1-2-catcorr&keywords=ocean+dreams+cd

They don't have to be chapter books, per se....I was just thinking that chapter books would be a bit longer than some of the other books geared toward his age, therefore might aid in getting him to sleep better.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, please keep them coming! :)

This has been DS's favorite for over a year:
http://www.amazon.com/Disney-Cars-Disneys-Read-Along/dp/0763421693

There's a whole line of these disney read-alongs, and they're all great (just pick whichever movie/storylines your DS most enjoys). We have a Winnie-the-Pooh one as well.

Have you checked your local library? I borrow audiobooks for both me and DS since we spend slot of time in the car.

Ds1 is 6 yo and we've been doing audiobooks since he was 2-ish. At that age, he liked Frog and Toad (a good length, not too short), Madeline, Cloudy w/Chance of Meatballs, and many others. Lots of Cynthia Ryland books (the Mudge series) are on audio and are good for younger listeners. There is a great version of Pecos Bill read by Robin Williams and many classic Disney books are available in audio editions (Peter Pan is very good, the original story too).

He is sensitive and found "Where the Sidewalk Ends" too scary at 4yo, but I loved the poems as a kid. He find the "Just So" stories scary now. He is listening to Stuart Little, Charlotte's Web, Ralph and the Motorcycle, Ramona books and other classics now (Wizard of Oz, 101 Dalmations).

If he isn't a sensitive kid you've got lots of options.

--The Frances Audio Collection
--Winnie the Pooh books on tape, where Pooh is Stephen Fry and the cast includes other luminaries like Judi Dench and Jim Broadbent - fantastic series
--Frog and Toad collection - read by Arnold Lobel - even my 2 yr old loves these on car rides.
--Dr Seuss collection - also features celeb readers (Kelsey Grammar and others)
--I would not try Rabbit Ears yet - we did at 3/4 and DD didn't like them( she wasn't ready).

Eta: these are all audio books that we borrowed out of the public library.
