I used to go to a seamstress who would charge me $7, but alas we recently moved, and the going rate around here seems to be about $10-$12.

I'm short and my pants are almost always too long (even the petites sometimes) so I learned a long time ago to do them myself. I just sew them by hand. I do all my pants except when they are lined. Then I have a seamstress do them.

Last summer I needed several pairs of (unlined) pants done quickly though, so took them to a seemstress and she charged $10 each. I found the seamstress through the dry cleaners I go to. She does work for them.

Usually at banana. I have a banana luxe credit card, so no additional charge. But I just left some jeans for hemming in may and found that banana no longer does original hem!! For the jeans in question, the new hem was very similar. But for some cuffed black trousers, it was horrible--there was and old hem that wouldn't press out halfway through the cuff.

If I take somewhere else, I request original hem, 15 plus. Regular hem a few dollars less.

Length, with shoes in, I like 1/4 in from the floor!!

What's the difference between original hem and regular hem?

Nordstrom. They will do basic alterations for free on purchased merchandise (years ago you could even bring in items from elsewhere but they stopped that since they cannot replace if something goes wrong). Ask a Stylist or the Tailoring Dept. They are similar to Banana Republic, if it's a basic cut and re-hem, it's free. If your jean has some type of special colored thread used on the stitches, eg. a mustard color on a dark denim that needs to be matched or a frayed or distressed hem that needs to be "re-created" there is a charge. Another plus of their service is if they botch it somehow, they will replace the item for you. No fuss.

I used to take my pants to either an independent tailor or one at dry cleaner's, but am not taking them to Nordstrom Rack. I have Nordstrom credit card and get $100 worth of free alterations per year. Here the price to have your jeans hemmed is $15-$20.
