DS has played with Legos at school and at friends' homes, but we don't have any yet. He will be 5 next week and I think I would like to get a set for him to get started with. DS is very mechanically inclined so I'm pretty sure he will enjoy this as a bday gift, I am just unsure of what to look for. This is on amazon, anyone have any other recs?

We have a similar brick box like that except it's fewer pieces and it's Lego Duplos. DD plays with them everyday.

If you are looking to start a Lego collection, check Craigslist and garage sales. I have gotten some really good deals. IMO the more bricks you have the better creations you can build.

If you local Craigslist doesn't have any listed, try putting up a wanted add. I found a set of 200 Duplos for $20 this way. They were bought for a grandmas house, and we're practically brand new.

This is a really good starter kit, it even comes with a brick separator which is awesome. Its nice because it has lots of wheels and car parts and it comes with simple to follow instructions as well as ideas.

This looks right up his alley- I ordered it off of amazon, can't wait to get it! I would live more suggestions though, and am curious how people store their Legos- what works best to keep them together?

Nu mama glad you like the one I posted. My DS started out with the City sets, I would show him some and see which ones he most interested in, they are the best priced because they don't pay license fees like Star Wars etc. When you are first starting out you can store the legos in a rubbermaid type box but soon it will take over your son's room and then your whole house. ;)

Katydid- one more question- do you store each Lego kit separately from the others, or with the pieces all together? I guess I'm wondering how important it is to keep sets separated.

the box is a great start!

I have gotten lucky on CL and at fleamarkets for large lots.

I would also maybe get a smaller kit for him to "make" something follow the directions for building

Sorry it took so long to reply, I just saw this. My DS likes to rebuild the sets over and over so we keep his sets together sorted into ziplock bags. I think you should see how you DC likes to play with them to decide if you need to keep them together or dump them into a large bin mixed together.

I highly recommend CL. We bought DD2's Duplos new, and got some as gifts - probably cost at least $75-90 for what we have. My neighbor got about 5 times the number of Duplos for his son off CL for $20! Wow!

That vehicles set is a good starter. The City sets are usually 5+ and those are great also. You might want to get him a smaller one of those and see how he does.

We also like to rebuild so I store each set in a ziplock. Except I have bought just brick sets and sets like your vehicle starter set. Those I just merge into a bin and those are our freeplay legos.
