Is this too much to ask? The sofa will be used a sofa often, so it needs to be comfortable. I am not worried about the mattress being super comfortable, just usable for a weekend guest here and there. We do not want to buy used. We may be willing to buy online sight unseen.

Anyone have one that they love?

In St.Louis we have a furniture store franchise called 'Weekends Only', (because it's only open Fri-Sun, they generally have cheaper prices then other places and a variety of brands.) I noticed they have *a few* like 5ish, sleeper sofas under $600 (about $499 mostly), that look decent. I don't think they ship, but I wonder if you have any similar discount furniture stores in your area you could check.

Try Big Lots or IKEA.

I have yet to find a sleeper sofa that I would let even "just a guest" sleep on - they are SO uncomfortable! Air mattresses are so much more comfortable. What about a euro-style sofa lounger? The ones I've seen at Costco look MUCH more comfy with firm supportive cushions that you can just throw a sheet over. Like these:

And I know I've seen ones under $600 on overstock.com too.

I was at costco wed and they had a really cool sleeper type sofa. It was a sofa with one side as a chaise that lifted up for storage. Then on the other side (2 people worth) cushions popped up. You then un-velcroed the back cushions and slept across the sofa. It seemed pretty comfy. I'm planing on having DH look at it to see if it would work as our upstairs couch...

It was 550

Check furniture stores for floor models; this is how we bought our sleeper for a really good price!

OP here-

thanks for the tip about floor models.

This couch is going to be in our playroom/office. We want the occasional guest to be able to sleep in that room, and I'm just not sure an air mattress will fit. We'll have to think about it some more. We were at jennifer Convertibles today, and they had some options. But there was an awesome floor model, but they rewuire it to be picked up ASAP, and we aren't moving for a few more weeks.

This is a little more expensive than you want but we have this sofa and love it. The way the bed pops up is so much more comfortable than a traditional sofa bed (no bars and springs digging in your back)! Highly recommend it! Only thing is that you have to decide if you want a left or right chaise... hope if we ever move that it'll work in our new space!

Yeah I totally saw this sleeper at our Canadian Costco this evening as well. It looks like such a great idea and even has the extra storage. And I like that it's not an unfolding mattress which always has to be thinner so it can fold, and hence uncomfortable. Is the one you saw bonded leather?

no it was microfibre ish-kind of a tan color which we like for furniture. I took some pics of it on my phone. Looks like it was a newton chaise sofa by pulaski. It says "soft premium textured fabric cover is durable and easy to clean"
