I would appreciate some examples of books your rising third grader can read unassisted.

Thanks!

My son is reading this book right now (he will be entering 3rd grade this year):

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Episode-II-Novelization/dp/0439139287/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1343915048&sr=1-2&keywords=star+wars+episode+2

He is really into Star Wars right now, so we also have some of these books:

http://www.amazon.com/Incredible-Cross-Sections-Star-Wars-Spacecraft/dp/0789434806/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1343915153&sr=1-4&keywords=star+wars+ships

He also really enjoyed this series:

My daughter loves Percy Jackson and the Olympian series. She like the Frog Princess series. She likes a lot of Greek Mythology and non-fiction stuff too. She likes the Sisters Grimm series also.

DD doesn't really enjoy reading. This summer, the books that she's been reading to herself and somewhat enjoying are Diary of a Wimpy Kid books and McKenna (American Girl) books. I say "somewhat enjoying" because DD really does seem to enjoy them when she reads, but she'd pick about 150 different activities above reading. Sigh.

My son enjoys...
Whimpy Kid series
Sports Illustrated Kids
World Record Books
A to Z Mysteries
Magic Treehouse - reads to his brother
Baseball mystery series (we have 3 of them)
Sport books - someone gave him some Lacrosse short novels/stories
Tim Tebo Young Reader version

We are working on his summer reading books.

My soon to be third grader is reading Harry Potter, book 2. I've already told him that the next books may be too scary, and he may need to wait another year to read them. He really likes them so far!

Let's see. This summer my son hasn't read as much as had been during the school year.

He has liked these series:
Shredderman (http://www.amazon.com/Shredderman-Identity-Wendelin-Van-Draanen/dp/0440419123/ref=pd_sim_b_3)
The Gecko and Sticky (http://www.amazon.com/The-Gecko-Sticky-Villains-Lair/dp/0440422426/ref=pd_sim_b_5)

These are both by Wendelin Van Draanen.

Just before school got out he was really into the Warriors (http://www.amazon.com/Warriors-New-Prophecy-Box-Volumes/dp/0061448982/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1343924980&sr=1-5&keywords=warriors+erin+hunter) series by Erin Hunter. He had just started the New Prophecy set. He seems to have burnt out on those, though, because I got him books 3 & 4 off Amazon, since the library didn't have them, and I don't think he ever finished reading them.

DS1 is on the 5th Harry Potter and is loving the series. I'm happy that he is reading something that is quality and spending a good deal of time with it. I'm sad that he has nightmares now that he hasn't had for years.

I do think that he is old enough to handle the themes in the books. He sure handles a lot at school.

Magic Treehouse books but they aren't as challenging as they were just a few months ago. He also likes the Scooby-Doo chapter books. http://www.amazon.com/scooby-doo-chapter-books/lm/R2A6JOJ2VEDQH8

On the other hand, one of our scouts was reading the Wimpy Kid books in K and we gave him The Mouse and the Motorcycle book for his 7th birthday which his mom said he enjoyed. This kid (and his older sister) are definitely above reading level. In 2nd grade I would see him reading abridged classics (it looked like a series put out for juvenile readers).

So, DS is probably at (or slightly below?) his expected reading level (per school standards). We have not pushed him to read harder books over the summer as he now does enjoy reading to himself as an activity and I don't want to stop that, so I will be interested to see next month if he is at a reading level appropriate for beginning 3rd grade.

eta: he also likes the Owly books, which are full-length wordless cartoon books (is it a graphic novel if no words?) I have him tell me the plot when he's done (I believe the school tests comprehension that way).

My daughter is going into 4th, but last year, she was loving The Sisters 8. It's a fantastic series. She also loved, Judy Moody, Ivy and Bean, Just Grace, The Little House on the Prairie series, Lion Witch and Wardrobe, et al, Percy Jackson books.

OMG - I could have written this exact post! It drives me crazy and makes me sad. Not sure what to do to foster an enjoyment of reading. We go to the library a fair amount and have bought her different types of books, but she just doesn't like to read much. She read like crazy to complete the county library's summer reading program... just so she could get the junky prize after completion!

Sigh.

My daughter read the first Wolves of the Beyond book when she was around 3rd grade. There are now 5 in the series and I've read the first three and consider them good, with the first one being very good.
