View Full Version : Can I share DS2's almost finished big boy room with you?

So the boys (ages 3 and almost 9) have been asking for bunk beds lately so we went ahead and got the ones at Ikea that are not as high and took out DS2's toddler bed. They are 63" high at their tallest point. The room is DS2's and will stay that way, but DS1 has been sleeping on the top bunk. Once school starts I'll probably have him sleep back in his room on the weekdays and then he can sleep in DS2's room on Fridays and Saturdays if he wants. I initially wasn't sure if I wanted to do bunks or a trundle bed, but went with bunks since we don't have the space to pull out a trundle and it would be a pain to do all the time if DS1 decided he wanted to sleep with DS2 (which he did). Ideally the bunks would have gone in DS1's room since he's older and more likely to have sleepovers, but there was no way to put bunks his room without them being too close to the ceiling fan and I really didn't want to get rid of the fan.

The room is mostly done, but I still need to either remove or reposition the road and vehicles since they are configured in the way that worked best with the toddler bed. Also the frames over the beds are empty still and will be filled in with art work from the boys. I also want to put DS2's name (Parker) over the closet with wooden letters, but I still need to buy and paint them. Pretty much everything was bought at either at Ikea or Target since I didn't want to spend a ton of money.

I got my room inspiration from this blog: http://stephensaint-ongeblog.blogspot.com/2012/03/kid-room-makeover-growing-up-style.html

Oh, and sorry if the pictures are kind of dark-- DS2 messed up my camera and the flash no longer works!!!

How adorable! Where did you get the awning that's over the train table? What a cute touch.

I have to update DD's room, and I keep seeing such cute things for boys rooms but nothing that I love for girls. Everything for girls is all flowers and butterflies, and while I think that is cute, I also see that I get sick of it so quickly. Walking through Home Goods the other day, they had everything you need for an adorable fire truck room and I was just drawn to it! I loved the bold red colors. Maybe one day...

You did a great job! I'm sure your DS will enjoy his new room a lot.

ETA: I just checked IKEA and I saw that canopy there. Wish they had in other colors. And I looked through the linen but it was mostly for boys rooms...one set for girls and it was hearts of course :).

It's from One Step Ahead:

They are from Target.

The vehicle canvas print is in the children's decor section:

And the vehicle decals I got on clearance there a while ago, but I still see them on their website:

The road I did myself with black chalkboard contact paper. I was supposed to put the white hash marks on it with a paint pen but didn't get around to it, but I will after I reposition it.

I love it. Great happy colors.

Questions about a few items...

what is the picture ledge you used by the beds? does it protrude enough that you think the boys might hit their heads or bump into it?

what boxes do you use in your expedit?

where didyou get your great big bookshelf? that's nice and has a lot of hard-to-find features.

Good job!

That's really cute! I've never done any decoration besides "here's a solid colored sheet on your bed. Here's a rug. Oh, and someone gave us a cute IKEA light fixture." You've inspired me to add some frill to my DCs' rooms. Is that a pool noodle under the bedding?

Thanks! The boys are definitely enjoying it and my favorite pieces are the red lamps. Makes reading before bed so much better!

The picture ledges are the Ikea Ribba Picture Ledges:

I guess the boys could potentially hit their heads on them, but I bought them since they are only 3 1/2" deep which I hoped would prevent that. So far so good after having them for two weeks. They come in two lengths-- 21" and 45" and I have one of each.

I use the Container Store sweater and shoe boxes in my Expedit:

Are you talking about the sling bookshelf? That's from One Step Ahead. I posted the link to it in the post above yours.

Is that a pool noodle under the bedding?

No, it's a Go Bed Bug foam rail. Which I love and have recommended to all my friends and past doula clients (for co-sleeping).
