I need a new blender, mostly for smoothies with ice cubes or frozen fruit. I don't want to spend too much, so not a vitamix

Thanks

I love my Waring Bar Blender (http://www.amazon.com/Waring-PBB25-Professional-Blender-Stainless/dp/B00004S8F6). It only has two speeds, high and low, but it works fine. I also love that it has a glass jar and that you don't have to remove any parts like a plastic bottom ring in order to clean it. We have had ours for 7 yrs. now and are really happy with it.

Wow that's a nice blender and cheaper if you don't care about color.

When you make a smoothie, do you add in one or two ice cubes at a time through the lid, blend, then add frozen fruit a little at a time? Or do you put everything in, then push start?

I ask because I have always tried adding everything frozen all at once in my cheapy blender, and it always turns into a huge block of ice. My mom says most people do it once piece at a time (?) So I don't know if it's my cheap blender or my method? I'm wondering if your blender or the one Annie posted above can do the job with everything added at the beginning?

I use crushed ice and let the fruit thaw a bit before putting it all in together, it seems to work better that way. I don't have a fancy blender..$30 glass jar type.

DH was in a major smoothie phase and ended up buying a Magic Bullet. We love it! It takes no time and you drink right out of the blender cup. I make ice coffee (frappucino) type drinks and smoothies for the kids all the time!

I don't use ice, just frozen fruit. And it all gets dumped in at once. I do get an air bubble around the blades this way, but I just turn it off and push the contents down with a spatula. Usually, I am making fruit and yogurt smoothie popsicles, but the recipe is fine for drinking.

For 3 cups (24 oz) of smoothie mix I use-

8 oz (1 cup)- lowfat or non-fat yogurt
8 oz (approx 2 cups)- frozen fruit (usually strawberries or mixed berries)
2 oz (1/4 cup)- honey
4 to 6 oz (1/2 to 3/4 cup)- lowfat or non-fat milk (sometimes I sub unsweetened almond milk)

Are any of these blender recommended above relatively quiet? In terms of blenders, I mean. I haven't used a blender for smoothies in years because I want to make smoothies for breakfast and DD and DH are still sleeping when I make my breakfast and leave the house.

We have a Ninja too and so far it has been great. We haven't really done green smoothies in it, but for fruit smoothies with frozen fruit and ice it works perfectly. We have this model, but I got it at Kohl's for around $80 after coupon and some expired Kohl's cash. I just could not justify $300+ for a Vitamix or Blendtec.

I use my Ninja for blending fruit smoothies and making "snow" for snow cones. Love, love, love it. I dump everything in at once and hit blend. All done. I don't want something I have to stand over and add things to it one at a time.
