Last night was an exceptional night in my life as a mom. As a mom of 3 autistic children I work very hard to teach them life skills. Many times I get upset listening to parents complain about their children and I have to remind myself that they have their problems and I have mine.

We are currently on day 3 of another round of AIT therapy. Day 3 is when one can start to see "glimmers" of new skills/development/behaviors emerge.

DS3 who is 5 and nonverbal was trying to get an apple out of a mesh bag. I asked him if he wanted an apple. He said "aaahh"! I just know he was trying to say apple. His typical response is to stand and stare at me until I hand over the apple. His normal response to to give no response and if I don't give him the apple fast enough to start fussing but no attempt at a word. Cannot express thrill that he attempted to say a word! I have never heard him say I love you. I have three children and only one will say it (but only after I prompt him with the words). I really pray that someday I will hear all three say it on their own. I really doubt that I will hear it from my first born but I wait.

Next up was DS1 who is 9 and nonverbal. I have been trying to teach this kid to swish with water after brushing his teeth. He is 9 years old so you have an idea of how long I have been working on this skill. Tonight I brushed his teeth and then took the cup and showed him what to do (for the zillionth time). He then took the cup, took a drink and spit it out into the sink!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Years, and I mean YEARS of trying to teach ONE skill and he just up and does it like he's been doing it FOREVER. I was seriously jumping up and down in the bathroom hugging him at the same time.

As the mom of one on verbal autistic daughter I partly know what you mean. Your post gave my the chills. I know what it means to hear those approximations and having them sound wonderful. Keep up the work! Take pride in all accomplishments! Hoping one day you will hear " I love you" from all your kids.

Way to go!!! You really worked for that victory. My older brother has autism and my mom was told when he was little that he would never read, never live independently, etc. She took him in and out of schools, taught him at home intermittently, etc and now he is a well functioning adult living in a group home, loves to read, etc. No one, NO ONE can underestimate the power of a determined mother. You will help your little ones achieve the fullest possible life for each of them! Awesome work, awesome win!

I totally get your excitement (also mom to 2 autistic sons) and I join you in the jumping up and down while cheering!! My older son is our most severe at moderately autistic and I totally understand about the not hearing I love you. He was non verbal for a year (he was talking by 1 year old and then at the end of 13 months old had complete and total regression--our non verbal duration is nothing compared to you, I know) and when he said his first word after that year I was a blubbering mess (bubbles was his first word--started out with bah, bahb, and then bubbles). Congratulations on the verbalization and the swishing (I still struggle with their teeth brushing)!!

Thank you! Yesterday was another good day with DS3 (Scotty). He normally doesn't have anything to do with other kids but he was running away from a little boy that wanted to see his iPad. The kid too chase and Scott started laughing and continued running. He would turn and look to see if he was still being pursued and giggled/laughed and kept running. He'd stop and wait for the kid to catch up and then start all over again. Not suppose to run in the waiting room but I didn't care. Social skills over-ruled the no running rule. Plus the receptionist looked and smiled so if she wasn't upset, the mom of the kid chasing Scott wasn't upset I am not going to be upset to see my child do something all other kids do ALL OF THE TIME!

AIT therapy I LOVE YOU!!!!:love5:

It's so wonderful to hear about the progress your children are making! I'm so happy for all of you!

I was thinking about Scotty recently and wondering how he and you are recovering from his ordeal. I'm so glad to see that he is doing well.

DS is 8 and we are still trying to teach him to swish & spit when brushing his teeth, so I totally get what a big accomplishment that is!
