DS1 (7) is LOVING "Wind in the Willows" -- we are needing an awesome follow up book (to help me avoid having to read the Underpants series again!).
Thanks!

If you haven't read them yet, DDs loved Stuart Little, Charlotte's Web and Trumpet of the Swan.

THat's a great one! I read that to DS1 a few years go but DD was too young at the time. We need to revisit it :love-retry:

The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles was a fave of both kids when we read it a few months ago. Very magical and one of our all-time favorites. It was also one I had never read, which makes it fun for me, too. http://www.amazon.com/Last-Really-Great-Whangdoodles/dp/0060218053/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1346169529&sr=1-1&keywords=last+of+the+really+great+whangdoodles
Some of these may be better for independent reading, depending on what reading level he's at, but I'll toss some favs out:

Homer Price
The Pushcart War
Stuart Little, Trumpet of the Swan, Charlotte's Web
Henry and Henry and Ribsy
Mouse and the Motorcycle series
The Twenty One Balloons
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh
Despereaux
The Great Brain
Half Magic
Roald Dahl is one of DS1's favorites. He has read and reread most of them. He says he's also re-reread many of them :P
My Side of the Mountain
The Moffats
Swiss Family Robinson
