View Full Version : Any thing like Junie B Jones but for boys

08-28-2012, 02:11 PM
DS is starting to read early chapter books. I've had great success finding books with girls and animals as protagonists but he wants to read about other boys. He LOVES Diary of a Wimpy Kid but I'm not sure its really appropriate for a 6 year old. Any suggestions?

I just ordered a few Ballpark Mysteries. I don't know anything about them but I think my ds will like the topic:

http://www.amazon.com/Ballpark-Mysteries-Fenway-Foul-up-Stepping/dp/0375867031/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1346179438&sr=1-3&keywords=Baseball+Mysteries+David+A.+Kelly

They may actually be too easy for your ds.

What about the Horrible Harry books? I would second The Magic Treehouse.

Magic Treehouse are very gender neutral (boy and girl are the main characters). My daughter (6) loves them.

DS LOVES Junie B. Jones. We tried some of the other series mentioned here but he always goes back to Junie B. Jones. He laughs out loud a lot when reading them. He also likes Captain Underpants, but I don't like those much.

Not necesarily gender specific but DS is obsessed with Bunnicula right now.

DS 1 really liked Bunnicula and the Dinosaur Cove series. Magic tree House was also a favorite.

Thanks, we picked up the Ballpark Mysteries and Stink at the library tonight. I'm keeping the list for more options if these don't stick--I had no idea that there were so many Bunnicula books.

The Miss Daisy's Crazy series is awesome.

I wondered if anyone was going to mention this series. I borrowed this book on CD and popped it in the car one day. I don't think I've heard the word stupid so many times. Even more than Junie B. On the plus side I thought it was absolutely hilarious, and I'm sorry I never got to the end, but the reader is almost too good. Later that night Laurel used the word stupid in exactly the right context, with the same amount of gusto. She wasn't even 3 yet. The CD was supposed to be for Dora and Arwyn, but I was previewing it after dropping them off at school. Needless to say that CD went back to the library.

Not bad books (very very funny), but it depends on your triggers. Dora loves Junie B. Dh thinks they're a little too edgey, but I think it's a good release for any venting she might need, cause she's normally so stoic.

Just an fyi ... Tales of a 4th grade Nothing is great but I think it's in Superfudge there is a discussion that Santa Claus is not real.... if you are a Santa celebrating family you might want to avoid that!

YES!!! I didn't remember this from when I was a kid (maybe because I was older and "knew" about Santa by then), but I almost fainted when 5 year old DS and I were listening to it in the car. I wanted to strangle Judy Blume!
