My children are 7 going on 8 and over the last 6 months we have done two read-a-loud books that have been a blast. Just wanted to share because I think this age can be hard. We want fun, involved stories, but still magical and imaginative.
First, The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton

The other is Tumtum and Nutmeg http://www.amazon.com/Tumtum-Nutmeg-Adventures-Beyond-Nutmouse/dp/B003IWYH3S/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1347156414&sr=1-2&keywords=tumtum+and+nutmeghttp://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51MdXJjuiQL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA300_SH20_OU01_.jpg

We have just had so much fun reading these stories. My kids are so sad we are near the end of Blyton's story, so I just ordered another of her works and hope it is as good. Both stories are appealing to boys or girls so I wanted to share.

We've love Enid Blyton here. I read them all as a child and my mum bought them for DD, so we read all the Magic Faraway Tree books and the Wishing Chair books and DD loved them all. Very old fashioned but she seemed to enjoy that part of it too.

The Wishing Chair is what we just ordered. I hope it is half as good as the Magic Faraway Tree. We also bought the Mrs. Pepperpot books. I found these when I was in London last year. I went into a bookstore and asked an associate to choose some stuff she considered classic and then I picked what I had not heard of before.

I would love to heard more recommendations from others. Where I live we only have Barnes and Nobles at this point and I am always looking for books that are not tied into a show, movie, or franchise.

Thanks!! Just put them on hold at the library. Hopefully these will be ones that both DS and DD will enjoy. DD often gets easily scared by books that DS wants to read, except Captain Underpants which I don't want to read.

Thanks so much! I'm not familiar with either of them but plan to check them out.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm hoping our library has some of these.

I love the Magic Faraway Tree and the Wishing Chair. There are also a whole lot of short stories by Enid Blyton and you also have the O Clock Tales. When they are older, there are the boarding school books and The Secret Seven and Famous Five.

Amazon does not offer the best prices for these though. I'd probably use Book Deposity to order the Enid Blyton since they are based out of the UK and offer free worldwide shippping. HTH http://www.bookdepository.com/

We have not read The Magic Faraway Tree but I'll add it to our list. Thanks for the recommendation.

My kids love TumTum and Nutmeg!

Just wanted to update that I ordered over $200 worth of books--my children's birthday presents--from book depository. They have an awesome selection of other books by Blyton and my kids love her so. They are anxious about what will happen when the Magic Faraway Tree is finished!

Good for you. :) I grew up reading all the Enid Blyton books and I remember wondering about what happened next. The thing about Enid Blyton books about the agic folk is that characters often make guest appearances in another of her book so it's kind of a fun treasure hunt finding them there.

We love the Magic Faraway Tree!! I love Enid Blyton and read many of her books as a child. I actually read the Spanish translations! I have a hard time finding them. I found some in a great NYC bookstore, but we have since moved from the area and I can't find them anywhere locally. Any suggestion as to what the best online place to purchase them is?

ETA: Never mind, I just saw shrocat's post. I'll try the book depository. Thanks!

The book depository actually sells some Spanish translations of the book too I think.
