View Full Version : Good toy for 17-18 month DS in hospital?

I am going to be delivering DS2 sometime this month, hopefully towards the end of it, but we'll see.

I wanted to get a few toys to keep DS entertained at least for a little bit while we're in the hospital. (He'll be with my family during the day but will probably come visit for a bit and I know everyone will want to see the baby.)

I found some good deals on Little People trucks at Once Upon a Child today, but I might save those for Christmas because I'm not so sure I want DS literally playing with them on the hospital room floor.

Any good ideas?

What about a magnadoodle?

:yeahthat:

My DD was about 20-ish months when we got her a MagnaDoodle, but I'm sure a 16-month old kid would enjoy it, too.

If battery operated things that make noise are OK, what about the LeapFrog My Discovery House:

My DD has loved this m&d puzzle for months now:
http://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Magnetic-Hide-Board/dp/B0014E7DIS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1349203618&sr=8-3&keywords=melissa+doug+latches

Also she's now 21m but in the last 2 months she's gotten really into buckles. I got her this and it's been a big hit:
http://www.amazon.com/Buckle-Toy-Buster-the-Square/dp/B0043G4JOA/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1349203669&sr=1-1&keywords=buckle+toy
it's small, purse-size for sure.

I have this on my wish list but haven't gotten it yet:

someone here recommended it.

Thanks! I have been using a mini sized magnadoodle the last week or two in the car to get him to sit down without a wrestling match (super fun at 8.5 months pregnant). I have a bigger one that I'll definitely bring to the hospital and thanks for the other toy suggestions, batteries/noise should be fine, we will be in a private room. We haven't really done much with puzzles yet but he really likes stacking and stuff so this would be a really good time to introduce them.

Leaptop would keep my LO entertained for awhile at that age, too.

Yeah, I would say a Leaptop (my DS just turned 2 and he's loved ours for a long time now). Or maybe a Mr. Potato Head- do you think he could put the pieces in and out? Or Megablox or Duplos?
Fun new books are good (maybe some nice new Priddy books or some lift-a-flap books). Would he be into any of those magnetic doll sets? (Melissa & Doug make them, also Circo brand at Target) I would say a Play-doh kit, but that's probably not too easy in a hospital room. :)

Stickers, or something like those vinyl stickers that you can put onto little scenes (like Colorforms)? Coloring books? Or maybe a set of Do-a-dot markers and paper?

As a former hospital employee, I can tell you it's a good idea to avoid rolling toys or trucks that can be played on hospital floors.

Does he like stickers? You can buy a nice big sticker book with 200-400 stickers on it that also creates a story book. I've seen them at Barnes & Nobles/Borders bookstores.
