Anyone not give out their cell phone number as the "primary" contact with friends even if you have an iPhone? I'm not talking about businesses. So, by implication, that would mean no texting... Just curious...

I don't have any "friends" like that. I only have friends. :)

I don't have an iphone, but I have a smartphone. If I give out my number, it's my home number. Most people who have my cell number have a reason to have it - playdates, neighbors, etc. There are quite a few friends of mine who don't have it and I don't have theirs. We call on regular phones or email.

Yes, my cellphone is still only for emergencies so pretty much only the school and any of dcs babysitters have it.

That said, I am wondering if I will have to change this soon. A friend texted me, forgetting that I only have a landline...it really is becoming a basic way of communicating. I'm not against it as much as I need to keep costs down.

I haven't had a home phone in 7 years. Same cell number for 10. My cell is my primary number for everything. Same for DH.

I give both numbers. Texting has gotten to be really useful. I usually don't here my cell phone so is not a great way to reach me.

I still give my home phone as primary contact.

If there is a need or it comes up I freely distribute my cell number, but it would not be the first one I'd put down.

I have a smartphone and e-mail from it and such, but I actually have texting blocked on it. I know I've missed things from people who assumed I did text, but anyone who knows me well knows I may have the phone but do not text.

We don't answer the home phone. Cell phone is our primary mode of contact.

It is my only phone, so no. It has never been a problem.

We got rid of our landline. So cell phones have been it for us for the past few yrs and I like it. Texting is extremely useful. It's my primary way of communicating with dh and local friends.

I don't see why you wouldn't give your cell to friends. We use our landline minimally and only have it because our alarm is wired through it. When we move next year we'll likely go cell-only. Texting keeps me in touch with friends so much easier than calling!

I only have a cell, but do not have free texting. I just usually let people know that I would appreciate if they wouldn't text me as I get charged for it. Occasionally someone forgets, but I jst remind them kindly and pay the 20 cents.

We still have a regular home phone and I honestly prefer talking on that type of phone than my cell phone so I still give out or prefer to get phone calls on my home phone. I still give out my cell number, but I have never had an issue with texts. I never texted much before I got my iphone so it has been kind of a non issue, and I don't mention that I text much either. I pay about $1 a month for the 4 texts I usually get from non iphone users. Not an issue for me.

Nope, I actually want my friends to contact me :wink2: I don't see any reason not to.

I have a smart phone, but have texting blocked. I use Google Voice and Google Talk for texting purposes. It's free. You get a separate phone number to use for texting. People just label it as "Text" when they input me into their contacts. I don't mind getting texts from friends, but I didn't want to pay extra for a texting plan... Data plans are expensive enough!

Love texting vs talking to set things up. Only a few friends do I enjoy chatting with via phone. Use cell more since I'm rarely home but going here and there. I do not look at phone while driving and call if need to ( car had easy integrated Bluetooth).
