OK, so these are new-to-me, but I found them to be hilarious:

Goodnight Goon (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/goodnight-goon-michael-rex/1110953586) by Michael Rex - a parody of Goodnight Moon (recommended for kids in grades 1 thru 3, though my toddler found it enjoyable; illustrations are cartoon-scary, but still scary for sensitive kids)

Frankenstein (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/frankenstein-ludworst-bemonster/1112096032?ean=9780312553661) by Ludworst Bemonster - a parody of Madeline (recommended ages 4-8, but, again, my toddler thought it was silly; illustrations are more cartoony than gruesome)

So ... having read these, and having a twisted sense of humor and love for the Universal Pictures "monster movies", should I seek out any more of the same or similar ilk?

These are just general Halloween so perhaps not the twist you are looking for.

It's Halloween by Jack Prelutsky was such a favorite that DD literally caused the book to fall apart from reading it so many times. It was read way before and way past the Halloween season. SHe was infatuated with the goblin...loved to find him and then would hide behind her hands while looking at him :rotflmao:

This is another fav at our house.

I'm curious if DS2 can repeat the refrain and/or act out the motions. I remember the older two hitting that point and it was so fun. They would be able to keep adding on the next part to the existing lines in the cumulative story.

General Halloween is fine - I happen to have really liked the ones I linked, but I'm open to anything.

DD is starting to get into Halloween and this is pretty important to DH and I - we met on Halloween night 10 years ago.

Boogie Knights (http://www.amazon.com/Knights-Richard-Jackson-Atheneum-Hardcover/dp/0689876394) is cute, but not specifically Halloween

We like the Jack Prelutsky mentioned above

scary scary Halloween (http://www.amazon.com/Scary-Halloween-Eve-Bunting/dp/089919799X/ref=sr_1_7?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1350426026&sr=1-7&keywords=spooky+spooky+halloween)

room on the Broom (http://www.amazon.com/Room-Broom-Julia-Donaldson/dp/0142501123/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_z)

In the Haunted House (http://www.amazon.com/In-Haunted-House-Eve-Bunting/dp/0395699428/ref=pd_sim_b_10)

A Dark, Dark Tale (http://www.amazon.com/Dark-Tale-Picture-Puffins/dp/0140546219/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1350426234&sr=1-1&keywords=dark+dark+tale)

These are general Halloween, not too scary, that my girls have liked.

This is a favorite in our house too. DD2 (2.5yo) is particularly into this year.

our additions this year were-- "vamperina ballerina" (i have a little ballerina and love vampires ;)) and "frankenstein" (we've read madeline so very many times....i LOVE this parody)

also "in a dark, dark room and other spooky tales" and "the witch that was afraid of witches" :)

we *heart* spooky things in our house :)

one of our long time faves is "ghosts in the house" by kazuno kahara:

I'm not familiar with Runaway Bunny, so this one's on my radar, but not on my list ... though I just saw it in DD's classroom library, so maybe it'll go on our list.

I bought Frankenstein because I was (passingly) familiar with Madeline.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions!!!

Oh this is a timely thread! Our Girl Scout troop is going to the assisted living center in a few weeks and I thought it would be fun for the girls to read a few ghost stories to the residents. Does anyone have any good recs for 8 yos to read aloud?
