String games and making different string figures is one of the things I remember my grandmother teaching me when I was younger. DD, along with many girls in her grade at school, has become interested in learning how to make string figures. It's quite the activity at recess now!

I remember making "overalls" when I was little, but I can't remember how to do it. :( I've googled and come up with a different version that involves making Jacob's Ladder and then having a friend pull down on part of the string. That's NOT the version that I learned. The version I learned was something you could do on your own. Also, I don't think it was that complicated. I never could get Jacob's Ladder to work when I was little, but I had no problem with Overalls.

Anyone have any idea how to make that figure?

I remember doing those! (At least, I think we're talking about the same thing...where you loop string around your fingers/a partner's fingers to come up with interesting shapes and puzzle-like traps.) These look like they'd be helpful:

As for free internet instructions, how about this:

I haven't watched it through, so not sure if it's what you're after or not.

missholly - Yep, that's the kind of thing I'm talking about! I found that youtube video, but it's the wrong version of overalls. Your book link made me realize that I should make a trip to the library tomorrow!
