Mattress off gassing

Did you off gas your crib mattress? For how long? Or your regular bed mattress and for how long? Does it depend on the type of mattress?

I never thought our crib mattress stank, it was a basic Kolcraft coil firm mattress. We set up our crib in January and put a sheet on it the day after we bought it. I have a bad sense of smell sometimes though, but DH picks up on everything and he never once mentioned it stank.

We put our mattresses in the basement for a week to off-gas.

Does it only have to do if you actually smell s/t? I had the impression the chemicals are there anyway, no?
Anyone else want to chime in whether or not you off-gassed your mattress?
