So, that wine glass thread got me thinking of my favorite wines and what I'll be serving at Thanksgiving (which is only 4 weeks away).

What are your favorite wines (red or white) under $20? And what wine(s) are you serving for the holiday meal?

I like Conundrum white wine. It's a proprietary blend and I love it. I have many more reds I enjoy. Echelon Pinot Noir is good, and Pinot Noir is a good choice for Thanksgiving. Unfortunately a lot of cheap Pinot Noirs are pretty blech. I'll be watching this thread. I have become a cheapskate when it comes to wine, and usually spend less than $10 a bottle. But I do like to spend more for special occasions.

Drinking this right now. Think I paid about $12 on sale.

The only thing I don't love about it is the more berry lean. I prefer a pepper/chocolate finish..smooth.

Barefoot Cellars Moscato. Cheap, yummy girly wine.

Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc

This exactly. I always have it on hand, because almost everyone thinks it is very drinkable (and red wine now gives me headaches).

Another vote for Apothic Red. Less than $10 and very drinkable.

:yeahthat: I also like Fish Eye Moscato. TJ's $3 bottles aren't half bad either.

I really like several mentioned by PP...

Apothic, ménage a trois, Kendall Jackson chardonnay.

For reds, we also like really like Cupcake and 7 Deadly Zins and for whites, we like Meridian and Cupcake (both chardonnay).

Yeah, Apothic is SOO drinkable!

For whites, I love a Bree Chardonnay, Bougrier V Vouvray (on the sweeter side) and Mendoza Station Torrontes (think crisp green apple). If you want apple, oak, buttery and smooth, check out Butterfield Chardonnay.

An excellent red is Milton Park's Shiraz.

DH loves Gumdale's Shiraz/Cab blend. It's our favorite party wine.

We just went to a wine festival and fell in love with a boutique winery: Barboursville Reserve Merlot 2007. Just over the $20 mark, but not by much. Fabulous.

If you're on the west coast (and I'm seriously jealous if you are), but Tobin James (we subscribe to their wine shipments) has a rockin' Cab and Zin (Ballistic) for $14 at Vons and Total Wine & More. Lurv....

For Thanksgiving, I think we'll serve a lighter bodied French bordeaux and Vouvray.

Louis Martini Cabernet

Robert Mondovi private selection cab, if you like robert Mondovi he has a more cost effective called Woodbridge. It's not bad if you drink wine everyday.

Cupcake- red velvet

Lol, I've seen some listed here that I can't stand :)
Which is why wine can be very subjective. For a cheap go to Chardonnay (if you don't mind some buttery oaky flavor) Chateau st Michelle Indian wells Chardonnay is my tops.
$20 seems to be a big price break for wine. I can't drink much below $15 anymore except the CSM. Nytimes.com had a good article outlast week listing great $20 wines.

:yeahthat:

For an even cheaper wine, I also really like Costco's Kirkland Marlborough Sauvingon Blanc. The is usually on around at the end of summer.

Sadly, I too can't drink red anymore because it started giving me terrible headaches a couple of years ago.

Yes, this for white wine. Sooo good.

Now I know what to have on hand for the next BBB get together! :54:

Huge fan of Sokol Blosser's Meditrina (red) and Evolution (white) blend wines. And I love that they differ year to year (similar to the conundrum wine PP mentions above). Yum!

We are lucky and even our local independent grocery stores have great wines for a good value:

Nice food-friendly white: Hop Kiln A Thousand Flowers
http://www.hopkilnwinery.com/wines/wine.asp?ProductID=478

Oregon Pinot: Dewey Kelly 2007 Pinot (though we liked 2006 better)
http://www.ribbonridge.com/default.cfm?action=display&Wine_ID=26

Interestingly, our local Costco has had these two awesome Pinots for about $20... each Costco has its own wine buyer and I've had really good experiences talking to the buyer about what I like and he'll steer me to try something really great.

Cameron Hughes is a small lot buyer that often has a lot of great value priced wine that is distributed online and through Costco:
http://chwine.com/

We also will pick up a Gruner Veltliner for $15-20 a bottle and it can go with fish or richer dishes... off dry German white. Many makers, I think Hugl is one of them... I can't tell the German names apart.
DH doesn't really like oaky chardonnays but he likes Grgich Hills Chardonnay.
I've also like Folie a Deux Menage a Trois but DH is meh on it.

Apothic Red- YES
Black Lab- only about $9 a bottle and so good. I don't like sweet but they also have a "Lab" red.
I prefer my chardonnays unoaked...this way you can really taste the grape which is usually lost in the oaky/buttery flavors. Plus I drank enough Chardonanny during/after 9/11 in NYC that I'm good with oaky chards for LIFE! I just discovered the Smoking Loon chardonnay, not oaked, around $10 and delish. Will probably serve this and or a Pinot Noir for Thanksgiving. Just need to find a decent pinot. I think my guy recommended a cheap one called, "Vino Vines?" not sure...

I generally prefer reds but my all time favorite white is Nobilo's sauvign blanc which I can generally find on sale for $9.99.
