I need to choose one. I have a 50mm 1.8 (the nifty 50). My kit lens (18-55) is broken. I need something for everyday shots.
Option 1- replace kit lens http://www.amazon.com/Canon-EF-S-18-55mm-3-5-5-6-II/dp/B000V5K3FG
Option 2- telephoto http://www.amazon.com/Canon-55-250mm-4-0-5-6-Telephoto-Digital/dp/B0011NVMO8
Option 3- medium telephoto http://www.amazon.com/Canon-85mm-Medium-Telephoto-Cameras/dp/B00007GQLU

I have all those lenses in my Nikon DSLR. If I were to choose among the 3 for daily use, my pick would be the 85mm/1.8 because I prefer portraits. The "bokeh" is nice on that one too.

Oh my gosh I love so many of the sample pics with that lens.
What about for landscapes? Disney?

For an every day lens, I like my 17-50 2.8. Most of my every day photos are indoors, so the wide angle is extremely useful. I didn't expect it to "live" on my camera, but there you have it!

The 80 mm is a great lens, but if you shoot primarily indoors, you'll need a LOT of room to back up in order to get full-length shots (especially if your camera body has a crop sensor).

ETA: this (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/423714-REG/Tamron_AF016C700_17_50mm_f_2_8_XR_Di.html) is what I have. My ideal lens would probably be something like a 17-200 mm 2.8, but I'm pretty sure that I could never afford something like that unless it were pretty poor quality! :)

What about a Tamron 28-75mm?

ETA: Oops, posted before I was done.

This lens:

I use the equivalent Tamron for my Nikon and am very happy with it. It's my go-to zoom lens. I've used it at soccer games and brought it to Disney. Around the house I usually use my 50mm or 35mm. I have a 55-200mm that I never use because I have personally never needed to zoom in that much.

Then you probably need a versatile telephoto lens with a wide end to capture a better field of view because most likely you'll be shooting behind a huge crowd. Factor in also whether you don't mind hauling heavier camera gear.

This is my "everyday" lens as well.

I have the Canon 50mm 1.4 and really only use it if I'm taking posed "portraits" of the kids. I have the 55-250 and use that solely for soccer. Though in my dream world I want to replace it with the 70-200 f/2.8!!!!

I have the same prime lens you do and I'm not a huge fan of my kit lenses, so I'm in the same dilemma. I rented the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 for our Disney trip and liked it. I think I'd consider that as my top candidate for a more "walking around" lens. I wouldn't want 2 prime lenses, I already feel like the 50mm is to narrow for a lot of situations, even though I love the open aperture. I'm also considering a wider lens, like 17-50ish.

If you are unsure and want to try out some different ones you could rent one. I use BorrowLenses. Even if you have to ship it instead of pick it up its still a reasonable investment compared to the cost of the new lens.

Another vote for the Tameron 28-75 as an everyday lens. I just finished a photography course through jessicasprague.com and the instructor highly recommeded this lens. I love it. I also have the sigma 18- 200 when I need a telephoto lense.

I believe someone here recommended Jessica Sprague. Great courses taught by Candice Stringham. I'm on my 3rd class.

$500 is out of my price range.....beautiful lens though! If I rent it for 10 days I'm looking at close to $100. I can't rationalize that when I can buy a "good" lens for around $150.

well it's more than $150, but my everyday, live-on-my-camera lens is a Tamron 18-270mm.

love love love! I take my camera everywhere (Disney! ballet recital! Swimming!) and this lens does everything i want it to. i have the nifty fifty that i use rarely, like when i am purposefully doing portraits or a "posed" shot like a PP said. or when DH and dd are doing something cute and we are home. I also have the kit lens (18-55 i think?) and also 70-300mm that i never ever used.

Before i had the Tamron 18-270 i would have never said i'd spend so much on a lens. now that i have it i would buy it again in a minute. i am sad i didn't have it sooner, TBH.
