dd loves to take pictures. she fills up my phone and now has an old vtech kids camera (circa 2007) that a friend handed down to her, and she LOVES ie. but the picture quality is pretty terrible. i'd love to get her a nicer camera for either christmas or birthday (will be 6 in Jan). any ideas for a pretty good quality but still moderately priced small, kid friendly digital camera?

DD1 has been able to use Canon Powershot models (I've had two) with relative ease since she was 5-6 years. I think that most of the major brands would be fine, though, so I'd look at how much you wanted to spend, primarily.

I second the Canon PowerShot recommendation. I gave DD my old one at that age when DH gave me a nice DSLR. DD can work it with no problem, it has great storage and photo quality. Either watch for a deal or sometimes they are a steal on Craigslist. Good luck!

Look for a P/S on sale and have a talk about wearing the wrist strap. Lots of fun to see the world from their perspective.

DD uses my canon powershot without any issues. It's a nicer model, so if it was going to be just for her, I would get her more of a base model. I find that the canons are very easy to use and take great pictures...regardless of model.

We got my 6 year old a Kodak Sport camera for her birthday last year. She loves it. Takes pics and movies with it. It's been dropped - no issues. It's shock proof, dust proof and water proof up to 10 ft.

We have this Nikon camera: http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-COOLPIX-Digital-Camera-2-7-inch/dp/B0073HSJLA/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1351269768&sr=8-8&keywords=nikon+waterproof+digital+camera

It is waterproof and shockproof. It is made for kids so it is very easy to use. We got some great pictures from our trip to a water park recently.

It depends on how careful your DD is. At that age, I gave my DD a generic shock-proof/waterproof camera because we travelled frequently to foreign country and went to the beach a lot. Last year when she turned 8, I gave her a canon P&S.

I am looking for one for my 8yo. Is there a particular canon you would recommend.
