I have been doing obedience training with my great dane and it has become painfully obvious that I need a better leash. The one I have is hard to wrap around my hands and difficult for me to manipulate. Anyone have any recs for me?

I assume you need a regular leash to go with a flat buckle collar?

This is my favorite - we have a flat black lead that we use all the time with our Newfs.

Use code HALLOWEEN for 10% off through today.

We also have some of the Mendota leads with martingales built in, and a couple of the Premier ones in different lengths. Four feet is easiest for my DC to handle. A short traffic lead is great when you go out in public like to a tree lighting or something and want to keep her really close. Six feet has been standard for obedience.

Good luck!

ETA my trainers have all recommended never, ever wrapping the leash around your hand as you can get seriously injured, even by a smaller dog - with giants you can really get hurt.

Thank you for the rec sophiesmom. I don't really wrap it around my hand, but what the trainer taught me is to put my thumb through the loop in the leash, fold part of the leash into another loop and then hold the folded parts of the leash with my two hands. We are using a training collar. Is that incorrect?

ETA: This is how I hold the leash but with both hands since Maggie is so big:

That's how I was taught to hold the leash many years ago as well. You might also want to look into the gentle leader. You could ask your trainer about it. It helps a dog learn not to pull when walked.

sophiesmom, I just get the homepage with your link. I was thinking a martingale collar would be great. She did back out of her collar when we got to the trainer yesterday (he did not want me to use the dean and tyler harness we have)! Could you recommend one of those? I think I will get her one of those collars and a 6' leash.

Someone recommended this one to me. Is it overpriced?

We have a leather leash like that which I got at Petsmart I think for around $30... now that was probably 10 years ago but I did think the amazon one was overpriced. We have gotten a few recently at petsmart that have a loop halfway up on the leash which is easier for our 5 year old to use? Maybe look for one of those. (Here I am telling you to look... so not helpful links... but I will look later today :) )

Off topic, but does this say anything about your husband that when I saw your thread title, I immediately thought you were looking for recommendations for HIM?! :ROTFLMAO:

Yikes! I'd never pay that much for a leash
This is where my favorite leash comes from

the 3/4 is really nice. I've had most of my leashes for >10 years. They've seen rain, snow, extreme training conditions - using them as a tie back for schutzhund and they're all in good shape.

For obedience, I like a 4-5 ft lead. The short traffic tabs are nice when you have a bigger dog in crowded conditions.

I happen to like their rolled collars. Again, super duper durable.

For a dane (or any other breed prone to neck issues, I'd stay away from a gentle leader) I have a wide martingale that I like alot for dogs that walk reasonably well on a leash. I cant figure out the manufacturer but if I can, I'll let you know. I called the store where I bought it but they didnt know what I'm talking about. The collar is very wide - 3 or 4 in at its widest point and tapers in the back.

I did not even say anything. It's a lost cause.

I suggest Ray Allen. They are leaders in training supplies.

Found it! (I think) Mine look exactly like this but the patterns are different. Seeing as they're 10yrs old, I'm not suprised!

http://www.rcpets.com/rcpets/index.php/browse/category/id/536_2#main_panel

this would be a walking collar. Not to be left in a crate etc jic it gets caught. It does have a limit as to hwo much it will tighten but still I like to be careful!

So I am thinking of ordering this one. It was recommended by several great dane owners:
