View Full Version : Where to hang stockings w/o mantle

Every year I need to figure out where to hang our St. Nick stockings since we don't have a mantle. The last couple years I hung them on the removable command strip hooks but we painted last year and got a nice (but small so they can't fit there) key rack where the stockings have hung before. I could put the strips up somewhere else but i was looking for something nicer this year. I've also hung them on the kitchen cabinets but I get frustrated with them being there and in my way all the time. So for those of you that don't have mantles where do you hang your stockings?

I've put them on a bookcase or tv cabinet in years past. I've even just laid them on the back of a sofa. I hate not having a mantel!

I did see a sweet idea on Pinterest: hang or put them at the foot of your bed and have the kiddos come there and open them before everyone goes to the tree.

We have a mantle, and we have weighted stocking hooks, but they made DH uncomfortable last year, so we used sheer ribbon on our railing instead.

I wish I had a photo available, but if I have anything, it's on my SD card that DH "confiscated" in his pre-Sandy "go-bag" collection ... and that's at home.

We use wooden sock hooks for this issue - they are great!

I second using the staircase (if you have one) or an anchored bookshelf. If you have a bar area on the outside of the kitchen, maybe that? What about the backs of everyone's dining chairs (or barstools)?

We have these, too. Ours came from Sturbridge Yankee Workshop but I know LL Bean also sells them. Pretty sure they all come from Maine. ;)

:yeahthat: We've gotten ours from LLBean but they are sometimes hard to get - they sell out quickly during the holiday season. They are in stock now though!!!

And if I remember right there should be a LLbean 15% off floating around somewhere?

We have a mantle but still use our staircase. We have 5 (humans plus 1 dog) and we wrap the banister with fake evergreen garland that have little red bows every foot or so and then tie the stockings with similar red ribbon. It looks nice, they are out of the way, don't worry about them falling on anyone, keeps the dog out of them, etc.

Yeah, we don't have a fireplace or mantel, either, and I've been hanging them with pretty ribbon on our staircase railing going downstairs. I space them about a half foot apart, and that's just enough room for 4 stockings.
Looking forward to moving someday and getting, or putting in, a fireplace! :)

When we didn't have one, I took down a framed print in a central location (in this case above our sofa) and hung a pretty ribbon across. I attached the stockings with bows.

Staircase?

Nope, staircase won't work. We just have a wall going upstairs, no spindles.

How did the ribbon hold up the stockings? How was it strong enough?

We tied them to the side of the staircase from the banister using big wide red satin ribbon.

ETA; We tied each with a ribbon looped through the loop on the stocking and tied in to a big bow at the top of the banister. Held really well, but we sure your ribbons are plenty long so you double know and get a BIG bow in there id you need to.

I'm planning on hanging our stockings on the entertainment armoire this year. We will have 3, DS, me, and our kitty.

We used ours for decoration mostly then just took them down on Xmas morning to open. You could put wire or fishing line under the bows. I think painted (or not) clothespins would work too. II actually braided several ribbons for the hanging "rope."

Eta: meant to quote OP's ? re: my earlier post.

I have some like that that I found at my local Ace Hardware store a few years ago. DS pulled down one of the brass one on his head when we was two and we haven't used them since.

ETA: Mine look like this: http://www.bronners.com/product/set-of-2-clear-plastic-stocking-hangers.do?utm_campaign=bingshp&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=gd&gdftrk=gdfV2399_a_7c470_a_7c6369_a_7c1083977

We don't have a staircase or fireplace. We drape ours over the back of the loveseat on Christmas eve and for St. Nick's....

This is pretty much what we do-- evergreen garland and stockings on the bannister. We lay a piece of red fabric under everything to protect the bannister.

Similar, but I use Command Hooks that I attach at the top of the spindles which get covered up by the garland.

I just bought this from Kirklands yesterday because we have nowhere to hang our stockings either:

Thanks for the ideas. I found this on Pinterest and DH will make a board when he gets back from from hunting so I'll have enough time to paint and decorate it before St. Nick comes. Hoping it turns out as cute as it looks.

Just remembered that years ago my mother would either hand them on our bedroom doors and then from our doorknobs when filled or on the backs of our chairs at the table.

Staircase. Doesn't require any hardware, just ribbon.

We started using Command strips as well, but I really like that stocking holder tree thing linked in this post as well as the sign.

We do this too! We also string lights through the evergreen. Keeps our dog and cats from finding the treats in their stockings too!

That's what we use, too. Got ours from LL Bean, including a new set of two since DD2 needed one this year.

However, I've seen some similar (metal though) hangers at Target this year.

Before Christmas we hang them over the window in the living room. Christmas eve we set them on the couch where Santa leaves them filled. That sign is cute though!

I really like this! We don't have a mantle or a staircase, either. We usually just lay them on the floor in front of the tree. I showed this to DD and she likes it, but we would have to figure out where to put the holder :rotflmao: DD said we can just put it in front of the tree. Guess I'll have to think about it. Thanks for posting!
