Pea Pod Travel Crib Recall: 220,000 Infant Travel Beds Recalled After Baby Dies
The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall in cooperation with KidCo Inc. of Libertyville, Ill., early Friday after determining that an infant could roll between the bed's air mattress and the tent's fabric sides, raising the danger of suffocation.

The recalled products, KidCo PeaPod Travel Beds and PeaPod Plus Travel Beds, are small, portable sleep tents marketed for use by infants from birth to 3-plus years, depending on the model. The tents have a zippered side for putting in and taking out the child and have an inflatable air mattress that fits into a zippered pocket underneath the floor of the tent. The travel tents were made in China and sold at independent juvenile specialty stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com from January 2005 through the present for between $70 and $100.

For more information, consumers can call KidCo toll-free at 855-847-8600 between 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. EST Monday through Friday or visit the company's website at and click on "recall info" to receive the kit. http://www.kidco.com

FYI, it's the "contact us for a kit" type of recall:

KidCo is offering kits to address the danger. The kits include supports that strengthen the sides of the tent and a thinner air mattress. Together, Kaiser said, they prevent the pocket from forming.

I'm wondering if I should still use our Peapod this week for my 3 year old. We've never gotten him to sleep if he isn't contained in a crib or the Peapod. The kit doesn't ship until December. The risk is really for babies, right?

I think it's OK for a 3 yo, IMHO. Even when we bought it 2.5 years ago, I remember being surprised it was advertised as being able to be used from birth, I would never in a million years put a kid younger than 18 months in that, it just never seemed OK for a baby. Even after reading the story of the 5 or 7 month old baby that died I continued to use it for DS (3 or 4 at the time) but advised a friend against getting it for her 1 yo.

I got an email from diapers.com about the recall, I haven't ordered the kit yet, though.

Yeah that. I will be using it for DD1 over Christmas but I wouldn't put DD2 in it until she was at least 18 mos.
